Based upon 35 years experience of open-wheel racing school experience, the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Racing School is the first and only racing school in North America in which students – no experience required – learn the art and science of race car driving in the very same car used in a professional racing series: the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup.

Your classroom is the Mazda Miata-based MX-5 Cup race car. Built to exacting specifications by Skip Barber Racing School, the MX-5 Cup race car features a mild steel rollcage, custom-fitted HANS Device compatible seats and harnesses and a racing steering wheel. A MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development package utilizes intake and exhaust system updates and a custom ECU to up engine output to 200 horsepower while custom shocks, springs and anti-roll bars bring the suspension up to racing spec.

Three Day Racing School

Based on the same proven curriculum as Skip Barber’s formula-car racing school, this program takes advantage of the unique capabilities of the MX-5 Cup racecar and the vast experience of Skip Barber Racing School instructors whom currently race closed-wheel sports cars and sedans.

In addition, because the Mazda MX-5 is a two-seater, our instructors can ride ‘right-seat’ for specific on-track exercises where instantaneous feedback is of huge value to the student.

Like the successful Formula Car three day school, the MAZDASPEED Three Day Racing School emphasizes track time combined with the best, most experienced instructor corps in the industry. Each day begins with a short classroom "chalk talk," then you're on the race track. What you can expect:

  • Day 1: Intense series of autocross, braking & downshifting exercises
  • Day 2: Series of high-speed lapping sessions combined with racing theory & advanced braking techniques
  • Day 3: Track drills in drafting, passing & racing in the rain; double-file race starts & single-file restarts
Drivers who successfully complete the Three Day Racing School are immediately eligible for Skip Barber Racing School Advanced Activities (see below), which qualify you to compete in the MAZDASPEED Challenge. Three Day Racing School graduates are also eligible to apply for a SCCA Regional Competition License.

One Day Racing/Driving Combo

“The Combo” is so affordable and so much fun; no wonder it’s one of our most popular schools! It combines the most exciting elements of the MAZDASPEED Racing School and the Mazda Driving School. Skid pad, autocross, high speed ‘‘threshold’’ braking, lapping the race track – you experience it all!

One Day Racing/Driving Combo graduates are immediately eligible to enroll in the Advanced Car Control program (see below).

Can't decide which car you'd like to drive? You won't have to with the One Day Racing School. Based upon the curriculum of the popular One Day Racing/Driving Combo, the One Day Racing School combines a morning of lead/follow lapping on-track in the open-wheel Formula Skip Barber with an afternoon of on-track action in the Mazda Miata-based MX-5 Cup race car.

One Day Racing School graduates are immediately eligible to enroll in the Advanced Car Control program (see below).

Introduction to Racing

Want to forget about speed limits for a while? Then go take a big bite of road racing! Strap yourself into our race car and head out onto the track. Lap the race track close to ‘the limit’ as you immerse yourself in the world of race car driving.

Introduction to Racing graduates are immediately eligible to enroll in the Advanced Car Control program (see below).

Advanced Activities

The next steps for the aspiring racer, Advanced Activities prepare you for the challenges of competition. Three Day Racing School graduates must complete a minimum of two Advanced Activities before they can participate in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Challenge.
Advanced Two Day Racing School

After learning the technical aspects of race car driving in the Three Day Racing School, learn how to work and play well with others in the Advanced Two Day. Multiple lapping sessions are combined with practice starts and restarts, passing exercises and lead/follow sessions with instructors to prepare you for the wheel-to-wheel competition of the Skip Barber Race Series. The Advanced Two Day Racing School counts as two credits toward your Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Challenge Advanced Activities requirement.

Lapping

Whether you want to learn a new track or continue to fine tune your skills, "seat time" is the single most important element in becoming a safe, competitive race car driver. A Lapping session includes two sessions totaling approximately 100 miles of track time and individual feedback from Skip Barber Racing School instructors. Lapping sessions are not timed and passing is allowed in specific, predetermined zones.

Advanced Car Control

Getting comfortable with the “seat in the pants” feeling of rotating a car is key to both quick lap times and being a more confident driver. The advanced handling techniques taught in the Advanced Car Control program will boost your performance when you take to the track. The Advanced Car Control program is available at: Lime Rock Park, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Road America, Road Atlanta and Sebring International Raceway
