SKIP BARBER TWO DAY SUPERBIKE SCHOOL

Overview

The Skip Barber Superbike School Powered by KTM uses three of KTM’s most fun and exciting street motorcycles. The 690 Duke is a lightweight and fun machine that can handle any road. The 990 SuperDuke ups the ante with big power too. And the 1190 RC8 is a world-class superbike, and the kind that only KTM could build. By utilizing all three of these world-class machines, participants get to experience a variety of handling and power characteristics. The goal is to teach riders to learn how to ride ANY bike more smoothly, faster, and more safely. The Skip Barber Superbike School Powered by KTM is held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the spiritual home of MotoGP in the USA and one of the most exciting and technical road courses in the country. There is only one track in the world with the infamous “corkscrew” dropping seven stories from turn 8 to turn 10, and the Andretti hairpin is a corner all motorcyclists should experience. And along with a fantastic track, nearby Carmel and Monterey offer some of the world’s best hotels, restaurants, and especially ocean-front scenery. There simply is no better place to spend a few days on track and off.

Unmatched Teaching Experience
Skip Barber has been teaching racing skills for over 34 years at tracks all over the US with some of the top professional instructors in the country. We have used that knowledge and experience to create the curriculum and organized approach to teach riders how to master any bike on the racetrack. With lots of seat time and lots of feedback, you will quickly improve your ability to control a motorcycle at any speed in a relaxed and safe manner.

Style
Riders will be put through a variety of exercises designed to help you learn to control any motorcycle on the street and on the track. Demonstrations and drills on body position, throttle control (especially in a corner), shifting smoothly, braking (including trail braking), and changing direction quickly will help you learn how to keep the bike settled in all situations, helping you to be safe/fast and smooth at the same time. In addition, you will learn how to read the track, and where to put the motorcycle for optimum speed and the least effort. All exercises are explained in advance, and video feedback is used throughout the program to measure and check your progress.

Curriculum
  • Alternating classroom sessions on and off track plus on-track riding sessions teach you a systematic way to ride any motorcycle safely, accurately, and predictably… all of which are required if your goal also happens to be speed
  • A series of regimented exercises and drills teaches you how to remain in control at all times, including effective braking/trail braking and throttle management in all situations including at lean angle
  • Repeated lapping sessions reinforce the value of perfecting your body position so that you can use the controls properly... focus and concentration enable you to make decisions and adjustments in adequate time... the foundation for efficiently controlling any motorcycle you ride.
  • Best-in-class instructors help you understand how a motorcycle steers based on the controls, and your control of the rake and trail, and available traction so that you can effectively use ANY motorcycle's geometry safely to your advantage
  • Lessons on how to choose your line and approach a corner will teach you skills for the racetrack that can be used every day on the street
  • Video lap reviews and critiques with cameras provide concrete feedback and help you visualize your progress
