SBNC Qualifying, Race One

Saturday, July 23, 2005 MONT-TREMBLANT, Que., Can. (July 23) – Remember what we said about Mont-Tremblant not being a drafting track in the same fashion as Road America? Let’s clarify it a bit… If you time a draft perfectly — planned or by accident — it can knock 10ths off your time here. And that’s exactly what Matt Varsha did; he was perfectly placed behind Jonathan Goring, another quick driver, as they exited the backside Turn Eight hairpin and was an easy 2 mph faster down the back straight. Varsha’s 1:47.902 was almost a second quicker than Jordy Vorrath’s 1:48.810. “I had pushed really hard and was spot-on my marks up to Eight,” Varsha said. “When I saw the opportunity with Jonathan, I knew it was going to work.” Gerardo Bonilla was set up to do the exact same thing, partnering with Andy Rossetto… but never got the chance. Rossetto went agricultural during the lap. By the way, Varsha only did six hot laps; his next-quickest was more than a second slower.

Qualifying for Round 9, SBNC at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant:

1. Matt Varsha, Atlanta, 1:47.902 / 88.414 mph
2. Jordy Vorrath, White Rock, B.C., Can., 1:48.810
3. Garrett Zine, Rio Linda, Calif., 1:48.838
4. Gerardo Bonilla, Orlando, Fla., 1:49.006
5. Cole Nelson, Atwater, Calif., 1:49.123

10. Richard Heistand, Sunny Isles, Fla., 1:50.517

Well, he’s up to “VarshaVarsha”; Matt takes pole for Saturday’s race.

Jordy Vorrath is alson on the front row.
