Rare Weekend 3-Day Schools! Autobahn, Laguna, Miller, The Glen

Tuesday, May 29, 2007 It’s rare, but it does happen… Skip Barber Three Day Racing Schools on weekends. Why are they rare? Because, naturally, all the good race tracks in the U.S. schedule their races for Fridays/Saturdays/Sundays. That means the opportunity to hold racing schools on weekends is limited, especially in the summer.

But Skip Barber Racing’s longtime relationships with America’s top circuits has given us the ability to schedule a handful of Three Day Racing Schools on weekends. Between the beginning of June and the end of the year, there are eight on the calendar – and all are at top notch venues.

The first one, just around the corner (June 15-16-17), is at the all-new Autobahn Country Club, less than an hour outside of Chicago. Next is the weekend Three-Day at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (June 22-23-24) in Monterey, Calif. The following month you’ll find two rare slots: July 6-7-8 at Laguna, then a July 20-21-22 weekender at a spanking-new track that’s been getting a lot of positive buzz lately, Miller Motorsports Park, just outside Salt Lake City, Utah. Then there’s a weekend Three Day at Watkins Glen International (September 21-22-23), with the last of the weekend schools at Laguna, one each in October (5-6-7), November (16-17-18) and December (14-15-16).

Autobahn is a country club race track in Joliet, Ill., that’s fast becoming very popular with enthusiasts. This first-class facility is only 45 minutes west of Chicago, just off Interstates 55 and 80. Autobahn is a multi-configurable venue and we’ve chosen the North Course because of its exciting mix of corner types. Turn 2 is Sebring-style hairpin, followed by a geometrically ‘‘perfect’’ Esses complex (T3-T4-T5). Ending the lap is an increasing-radius righthand complex that shoots you onto the front straight. Great stuff! We were just there for a couple of High Performance Driving Schools and our instructors and the customers were both thrilled with the track.

The Des Plaines River runs through the heart of Joliet, a town of 150,000 visited by millions each year checking out its two casinos, the ‘‘Chicagoland’’ NASCAR track, an NHRA dragstrip, a beautiful minor league baseball stadium, and its water parks, libraries and museums. There is a Fairfield Inn and a Hampton Inn not far from Autobahn Country Club.

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, just south of San Francisco/San Jose, on the Monterey Peninsula, is famous the world over – for good reasons. Laguna is 11 brilliant corners undulating up, over and down Monterey’s gorgeous geography. Few tracks anywhere are as fun as Laguna Seca! Of course, people vacation in Monterey for a lot of other reasons besides the race track: world class dining, the fantastic scenery, Cannery Row, the aquarium and dozens of other attractions.

Miller Motorsports Park is big, new and smooth, with lots of run-off and an infrastructure that has all the amenities. The track is dramatically backdropped on its eastern and western borders by the steep Wasatch and Oquirrh ranges of the Rocky Mountains. The circuit already books a number of high-profile events, including ALMS, Grand-Am, AMA Superbike and even NASCAR West.

There are few places in the world as gorgeous as the Finger Lakes Region of New York, especially in the fall. And there are few tracks in the world with as much rich racing heritage as Watkins Glen International, home of the last ‘‘real’’ U.S. Grand Prix. Do your racing school at the Glen and you’ll be following the wheeltracks of more auto racing legends than you can count.

A student just past the second apex of one of the world’s most famous corners — The Corkscrew, at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Dramatic mountains, uniquely named turns, a very cool track. That’s Miller Motorsports Park.
