One Day Remains in Skip Barber Karting Shootout
Dec 05, 2010Wednesday, December 08, 2010 For the first two days of the 14th Annual Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shootout, drivers attended brushed up on interview skills, learned highway safety, were educated on the business of motorsport, tested their everyday car control skills and became acclimated to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Yesterday, day three, the karters had the entire day to prove themselves on track in the Formula Skip Barber race cars. Drivers remained in the same four groups they’ve been in so far, based on previous race experience.
With seasoned (mostly all are former professional race car drivers themselves) Skip Barber Racing School instructors on each corner writing notes and giving feedback, each driver’s every move was under watchful eye. If any driver were to have an off track excursion or simply want some helpful tips, they were able to pull into the pits during their session and receive radio feedback from the instructors. Each group was able to perform on track for two thirty-minute sessions.
The rain clouds held back for most of the day, resulting in a sunny morning, and even early afternoon. By the time session three of the weekend rolled around for group three, the clouds rolled in and the rain came down. Drivers in group three and four held themselves incredibly well during the downpour, applying instructor feedback and improving their track times.
At the end of the day, drivers headed home and instructors gathered to discuss the day’s events and each driver’s performance. Everyone’s experience, improvements, off track attitudes, lap times and more. Today, the four groups will be reassigned to further asses each driver and their eligibility for the scholarships.
Six scholarships will be rewarded at the conclusion of the weekend: (2) a full season in the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda, (2) full seasons in the Skip Barber Racing School Regional Summer Race Series, (1) half season with the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda and (1) half season in the Skip Barber Racing School Regional Summer Race Series.
