2013 -2014 Skip Barber Winter Series presented by Mazda Finale: Wilby and Soori Clinch Championship
Braselton, GA. (April 8). It was an exciting weekend in Sebring, Florida for the last round of the 2013-2014 Skip Barber Winter
Series presented by Mazda. Racers in the Skip Barber Formula an dMAZDASPEED Challenge took to Sebring International Raceway to crown a champion for the season.
Keyvan Soori and Nikita Lastochikin finished the weekend at the top of the Formula Skip Barber Championship point standings, and Jim Wilby took the MAZDASPEED championship holding off veteran racer Bryan Hixon. Rookie Ben Auriemma and Mac Korince also take accolades from the weekend winning ‘Rookie for the Year’ in their respective classes.
A new season of racing will kick off at NOLA Motorsports Park May 16-18th for the 2014 Skip Barber Summer Series presented by Mazda. The 2014 Skip Barber Summer Series will travel to six iconic tracks across the country and racers will have 16 rounds in the Formula Skip Barber class and 12 rounds in the MAZDASPEED Challenge class to battle for the 2014 Summer Series championship. Group One, Race One – Formula Skip Barber
Brandon Angel started on pole with championship contender Nikita Lastochkin behind him. Green flag drops and the racers are side by side. Early in lap 1, Lastochkin challenges Angel for the lead but holds him off. At the back of the pack, Jackie Ding charges hard to pick up six spots moving him into sixth place. Going into lap 3, Angel still holds first with Lastochkin in second and Rookie Ben Auriemma in third. Winter Series points leader Keyvan Soori, who started the race in fifth retires early at the end of lap 3. As the racers enter lap 4, Lastochkin, battling hard for the top spot overcomes Angel for the lead, but Angel is close behind. In turn 5, Matt Donmoyer goes four off and falls back one spot, allowing Jeffrey Stern to move up to tenth. Angel and Lastochkin are nose to tail entering lap 5, and Angel makes a pop and overcomes Lastochkin but Lastochkin is right behind him. Lastochkin does not waste time and captures the top spot from Angel shortly after. Lastochkin takes the win, Angel in second.
Group One, Race Two – Formula Skip Barber
Brandon Angel started the race on pole, but Rookie Ben Auriemma makes an early pop for the lead in the race and overcomes Angel for the top spot. Auriemma’s lead is short-lived as Angel makes a move late in turn 6 to over take him for the lead. Going into lap 3, racers are side by side. Heading into turn 7A, Jackie Ding hits Jeffrey Stern and both racers retire early. Nikita Lastochkin who began the race in third is quickly challenged by Keyvan Soori who is currently in fourth. Soori makes his move and overcomes Lastochkin for the the third position. In the front, Angel and Auriemma are still nose-to-tail but Auriemma is not giving in. In lap 5, Angel falls back two spots as he goes four off in turn 15 allowing Auriemma to take the top spot. Lastochkin moves up to second. Auriemma takes the win followed by Lastochkin and Soori for third.
Group Two, Race One – MAZDASPEED Challenge
Bryan Hixon begins the race on pole. Skip Barber Master Michael Auriemma makes an early pop for the second spot and overtakes Jim Wilby going into lap 2. Wilby falls back to the ninth place. Rookie Mac Korince picks up two spots early in lap 1 and slides into third place. Grand Master Felix Borodaty charges hard and manages overtakes Korince for third. Entering lap 3, Brad Roudebush has a hard 2 off but continues. Roudebush falls 2 spots. Wilby also gaining momentum as he picks off 3 spots in one lap moving him into sixth. Wilby continues to pick up spots, moving into fourth entering lap 4. Hixon still leads the pack. Wilby inching up on Borodaty and makes a pop for the third spot and makes it stick. In lap 5, Paul Arnold spins in Turn 10 in lap 5 and drops back 2 spots. Wilby makes a pop for second and Auriemma drops back to third. Hixon takes the win followed by Wilby and Auriemma takes third.
Group Two, Race Two – MAZDASPEED Challenge
Bryan Hixon begins the race on pole. Green flag drops and racers are side by side. Going into turn 1, Jim Wilby takes the lead from Hixon early. Paul Arnold, Skip Barber Grand Master, charges hard to pick up two spots to move into fourth place. The front two, Hixon and Wilby breakaway from the group going into turn 10. Going into lap 3, there is a three car race for the third between Skip Barber Master Michael Auriemma, Rookie Mac Korince and Arnold, but no one makes a pop for the spot. Going into lap 6, Wilby extends his lead from Hixon. Arnold makes a move on Auriemma in the hairpin and takes the spot, but Auriemma takes the spot right back.Going into turn 10, Arnold spins allowing Auriemma to extend his position in third. Going into the last lap, Wilby still has the lead but Hixon is right behind him and charges hard to try to take the lead but can’t make the pop stick. Wilby takes the win with Hixon in second and Auriemma in third.
Group Two, Race Three – MAZDASPEED Challenge
Jim Wilby begins the race on pole. The green flag drops and racers are side by side going into turn 1. Skip Barber MasterMichael Auriemma makes an early pop for the lead and overcomes Wilby. Top 3 are side by side entering lap 2. Master Brad Roudebush makes a move for fourth and overtakes Paul Arnold going into lap 3. Racers are single file. Wilby retakes the lead from Auriemma and Rookie Mac Korince makes a pop for second sending Auriemma back to third. Heading into lap 6, Arnold makes a pop for fourth and reclaims his position from Roudebush. Arnold is closing gap between him and Mac Korince who is in third. Wilby still leads with Auriemma in second. Arnold makes a pop for third and makes it stick. Wilby wins, Auriemma takes second and Borodaty takes third.
