2014 Skip Barber Racing School INDYCAR Academy Begins 2nd Day of Competition

Braselton, Ga. (December 16, 2014) – Continuing it’s 40-year tradition of finding, training and developing the best drivers in the world, the 3nd annual Skip Barber Racing School INDYCAR Academy kicked off at Sebring International Raceway yesterday. All of the outstanding candidates are vying for a championship win, which would jump start their dreams of a career in racing.

“ The competitors spent yesterday getting reacclimated with the car, and had their first timed session,” said Keith Dalton, Director, Competition. “Today will be a pivotal day for the racers as they will have two more time sessions that will impact their overall score.”

In addition to the time sessions, racers will also have the opportunity to listen to last year’s winner, Michai Stephens, speak about his experience in the Academy as well as first-hand advice about what it takes to capitalize on the experience. Senior instructor, Bruce MacInnes,  as well as other veteran instructors will speak to the drivers about the motorsports industry.

Eligibility for the Skip Barber Racing School INDYCAR Academy is simple: graduate from one Skip Barber 3-Day Formula Car Racing School and 2-Day Advanced Racing School. Individuals must be nominated for the Academy by a Skip Barber Racing School Instructor and meet the following criteria:

  • No Car Racing Experience

    • Including club, pro, historic and non-SBRS sanctioned shootouts

  • No Outdoor Karting Experience

The shootout is an intense competition that rewards consistent speed and punishes mistakes. The grand prize is a fully sponsored entry in the 2015 Skip Barber Summer Series.

Competing in the Skip Barber Race Series makes it possible to have a shot at the year-end Skip Barber Race Series Championship Shootout and a chance for sponsored advancement down the Mazda Road to Indy: USF2000, Pro Mazda and Indy Lights.

In addition to the Skip Barber INDYCAR Academy, Skip Barber Racing School also provides two other paths for drivers to enter the Mazda Road to Indy:

  • For karters, Skip Barber Racing School conducts the Skip Barber Racing School Karts to Cars Shootout which allows karters to move from karts to Formula Skip Barber 2000 race cars. The winner of the Karts to Cars Shootout will win a fully sponsored entry in either the summer or winter Skip Barber Racing Series. This year’s winner was Danielle de la Calle from California.

  • For individuals with prior racing experience, Skip Barber Racing School offers an arrive-and-drive regional race series. Each year, Skip Barber Racing conducts 12-14 Race Weekends; 6 or 7 double-race events for each of the two seasonal championships. Competing in the Skip Barber Race Series makes it possible to have a shot at the year-end Skip Barber Race Series Champion Shootout, and a chance for sponsored advancement down the Mazda Road to Indy.
