Skip Barber Racing School alumni Josef Newgarden bested fellow graduate Kyle Kirkwood to claim victory in INDYCAR’s return to Phoenix. A late-race strategy call put Newgarden on a fresh set of tires, placing him in position to slice through the field. In the final 33 laps, Newgarden passed nine competitors enroute to his second consecutive win at Phoenix—albeit eight years since the last race there. Kirkwood, whom Newgarden passed for the lead in the waning laps, finished second. Alexander Rossi (6th) and Graham Rahal (9th) also finished in the top ten. With a pair of races in the books, Newgarden and Kirkwood sit atop the points standings, with Newgarden holding a five-point advantage. INDYCAR shared the Phoenix weekend with the NASCAR Cup Series and the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. Those races saw multiple Skip Barber Racing School alumni finish in the top ten, with Sammy Smith (6th), Jeb Burton (7th), and Anthony Alfredo (10th) delivering solid runs in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. Smith also won Stage 1. On Sunday, Skip Barber alumni Bubba Wallace (6th) was the highest-finishing graduate, with Michael McDowell (9th) and Erik Jones (10th) joining him near the front of the field. It was Wallace’s third top-ten finish of the season, and he now sits third in the points standings. In Sebring, IMSA dropped the green flag on its newest series: the IMSA Airbnb Endurance Challenge. The series, designed to give LMP3 teams and drivers a taste of endurance racing, features two-driver lineups competing in two-hour races. Alumni Brian Thienes (2nd), Ari Balogh (3rd), and Danny Soufi (4th) finished in the top half of the grid. Finally, Skip Barber graduate Westin Workman delivered a pair of victories at Circuit of the Americas last weekend in the IMSA VP Sportscar Challenge.
