This weekend, alumni of the Skip Barber Racing School captured victories in open-wheel cars at NOLA Motorsports Park and at the Long Beach Grand Prix, took home podium finishes in sportscars, claimed multiple top ten finishes at Bristol Motors Speedway, and gained control of the USF Juniors championship standings. Beginning in NOLA Motorsports Park where the Skip Barber Race Series and the USF family of series were on-track. In the Skip Barber Race Series, Chris Spada swept the weekend with a pair of victories. Meanwhile, reigning Skip Barber Race Series champion Oliver Wheldon was off to an excellent start in USF Juniors. Wheldon earned pole position for his debut race and converted that to a trio of podium finishes. With a pair of second-place results and a third-place finish in-hand, Wheldon leaves NOLA with the championship-lead to his name. Fellow Skip Barber alumni Ty Fisher won Race 3 and added two, top five, finishes to his weekend. With Fisher and Wheldon’s success, the top two spots in the USF Juniors championship are held by Skip Barber Racing School graduates. Elsewhere in the USF Juniors field, three former Skip Barber Race Series drivers made their debut with Matan Achituv, Thomas Nordquist, and Lincoln Day all taking part in the weekend’s action. In the USF2000 field, Skip Barber alumni Jack Jeffers earned three top five finishes. Through the opening five races of the season, Jeffers has not finished outside of the top five and is second in the championship standings. Fellow Skip Barber Racing School graduates Jeshua Alianell, Caleb Gafrarar, and Teddy Musella also earned top ten finishes from NOLA. Last year’s USF Junior’s champion, Skip Barber alumni Max Taylor, made his USF Pro 2000 debut and earned a pair of top five finishes, including one podium. Graduate Tyke Durst finished tenth in Race 1. On the West Coast, the streets of Long Beach were filled by the NTT IndyCar Series, IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship, and GT America powered by AWS. Skip Barber Racing School alumni Kyle Kirkwood headlined the weekend with a pole position, a race-high 46-laps led, and the victory in the Grand Prix of Long Beach. His Andretti Autosport teammate, and fellow graduate, Colton Herta (7th) joined him in the top ten. In GT America, Skip Barber alumni Judson Holt swept the weekend with a pair of victories in the series’ GT4 class. Graduate George Kurtz was fourth in the overall results of both races. Aaron Telitz and Robby Foley both claimed top five finishes in Saturday’s IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship race. In Eastern Tennessee, NASCAR settled in for a weekend of action from Bristol Motor Speedway. Among the notable finishes from Skip Barber alumni were Ross Chastain (7th), AJ Allmendinger (9th), and Austin Dillon (10th). In the NASCAR Xfinity Series, graduates Sammy Smith (4th), Brandon Jones (5th), and Christian Eckes (9th) finished in the top ten. Finally, in Formula 1, Skip Barber alumni Zak Brown and his McLaren Racing outfit captured their third win of the season and extended their lead in the World Manufacture’s Championship. Next weekend, Formula 1 will travel to Saudi Arabia and the Jeddah Corniche Circuit. The NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will return to Rockingham Speedway while the NASCAR Cup Series takes the weekend off.
