In the 65th running of the Daytona 500, Skip Barber alumni took four of the Top-5 spots, with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. claiming victory over Joey Logano in an overtime finish. Stenhouse Jr., who drives for the single-car team of JTG Daugherty Racing, brings his overall NASCAR Cup Series win count to 3 victories. Last year’s NASCAR Cup Series Champion, Logano, was in great shape to have a good run to the finish, but once the field was frozen by the caution coming out, he was less than a car length short of winning the Great American Race. Chris Buescher piloted his No. 17 Ford for RFK Racing to a fourth-place finish after leading 32 laps, with the pole winner and the driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, Alex Bowman finishing fifth. A pair of Skip Barber graduates finished 1-2 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway. Like the Cup Series race, the field was frozen at the moment of caution on the final lap, with Austin Hill only a few inches ahead of John Hunter Nemechek. Hill led a race-high of 38 laps on his way to his second straight win in the Xfinity Series season opener race at Daytona. Reigning NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion Zane Smith won the rain-shortened race after completing 79 of the scheduled 100 laps. Smith, who drives the No. 38 Ford for Front Row Motorsports, won the season opener for the second straight year after taking the lead for the final time on Lap 65. Fellow Skip Barber graduates Christian Eckes and Grant Enfinger finished in the Top-5. Eckes, who led a race-high of 19 laps, finished third, with Enfinger finishing fifth.
