A Skip Barber Racing School graduate will start the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500 from the front row after a remarkable run in qualifying this weekend. Skip Barber alumni, and reigning Indianapolis 500 winner, Josef Newgarden will begin his pursuit for a second Borg-Warner Trophy from the outside of the first row next Sunday. Just behind Newgarden will be graduates Alexander Rossi and Santino Ferruci on the second row of the grid. Additionally, alumni Kyle Kirkwood and Ryan Hunter-Reay earned spots in the fourth row with strong showings to get into Sunday’s Top 12 shootout. As Skip Barber Racing School graduates traveled over 230mph on the 2.5-mile track in Indianapolis, another group of alumni were preparing for a showdown on North Wilkesboro’s 0.625-mile short track in North Carolina ahead of NASCAR’s All-Star Race. Graduate Joey Logano led 199 of the race’s 200 laps, smashing the All-Star Race record for most laps led on his way to victory. Fellow Skip Barber alumni Chris Buescher (3rd), Bubba Wallace (6th), Ross Chastain (7th), Michael McDowell (9th), and Kyle Busch (10th) also finished in the top ten. Lastly, graduate Noah Gragson finished the night in 11th after qualifying for the All-Star Race by winning the fan vote. It wasn’t just ovals where Skip Barber Racing School graduates found success as former Skip Barber Race Series race-winner Jaxon Bell claimed his maiden win in the second race of the Toyota GR Cup North America weekend following a podium in Race 1. Westin Workman, himself a Skip Barber Racing School alumni, also collected a pair of podium finishes on the 3.42-mile road course of Circuit of the Americas. Skip Barber Racing’s Alex Garcia earned his third Hard Charger Award of the season by passing an astonishing 15 cars in Race 1 to finish tenth. In GT World Challenge America, graduate Colin Braun earned two podium finishes in the pair of races while alumni Robby Foley and Bryan Sellers each took home one podium result. Skip Barber Racing also welcomed the father and son duo of Marc and Tyler Sharinn to the operation. After multiple training sessions with the instructors from the Skip Barber Racing School, the pair strapped into the #16 Skip Barber Racing School Aston Martin Vantage GT4 at Circuit of the Americas. Marc and Tyler finished seventh in class after the three-hour endurance race in GT4 America on Saturday, an excellent showing for their debut with the tried-and-true team at SBRS. Including the Sharinn duo in GT4 America, Skip Barber Racing operated seven entries across three different series. Arrive-and-drive opportunities with the team are available for the remainder of the SRO America season with iconic tracks such as VIRginia International Raceway and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway still ahead. Finally, in Italy, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Sergio Perez finished the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in eighth. Perez remains third in the World Driver’s Championship and continues to help Red Bull Racing maintain control of the World Constructor’s Championship. Looking ahead to this weekend, the Monaco Grand Prix, the 108th Indianapolis 500, and the Coca-Cola 600 will once again serve as the iconic Memorial Day triple-header of racing with Skip Barber Racing School graduates from Perez and Newgarden to Chastain and Tyler Reddick set for an action-packed weekend of motorsports. Twelve of the Indianapolis 500’s thirty-three drivers are graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School. Four, Newgarden, Rossi, Helio Castroneves, and Hunter-Reay, are previous winners while the remaining eight, including Colton Herta and Conor Daly, are searching for their first appearance on the Borg Warner trophy. As Newgarden and Rossi pursue their second Indianapolis 500 victory, the series where their racing career began, the Skip Barber Formula Race Series, will be on track at Circuit of the Americas for Round 3 of the 2024 season.
