Caleb Gafrarar vaulted himself into championship contention with a pair of wins at Sebring International Raceway in the Skip Barber Race Series. The 15-year-old, who is in his first year of car racing after dominating the karting scene, led every lap of Race 1 after starting on pole and passed championship leader Sebastian Wheldon to secure the victory in Race 2. Right from the start of the week, Gafrarar proved himself to be a serious contender for the final six races of the season. He led Practice 1 by over half of a second and was second quickest in Practice 2, behind only the aforementioned Wheldon. Strong performances in both of the week’s qualifying sessions gave him pole for Race 1 and a spot on the outside of the first row for Race 2. After entering the weekend fourth in the championship standings, Gafrarar was in an excellent position to climb the leaderboard. While Gafrarar controlled the race at the front, Sebastian Wheldon passed Gabe Tesch and Jeshua Alianell to move from his fourth-place starting position to the second step of the podium by the end of the 25-minute race. Alianell would go on to fend off Tesch to claim third. Impressively, Rob Tarlton of the Master’s class gained one position to earn himself a top-five result. Rob’s twin brother Tom Tarlton was ninth overall and second in class while Edgar White completed the Master’s podium. Later in the afternoon, Sebastian Wheldon led the field into the high-commitment Turn 1 at Sebring to start Race 2. To his outside was Gafrarar, setting up a showdown between two of the fastest drivers of the week. For multiple laps, Gafrarar filled the mirrors of Wheldon, searching for his best opportunity to pounce. Using the draft on the exit of the low-speed Turn 13, Gafrarar dove to the inside of Wheldon with a bold move at Turn 15, snatching the lead of the race from the polesitter. Once out front, Gafrarar would lead for the rest of the race, giving him his second win of the season just hours after his first. Wheldon would settle for another second-place result but a solid haul of points for his championship prospects. Gabe Tesch climbed two positions to finish third, his second podium of the season. Nicholas Maloy ended Race 2 in fourth while Spencer Schmidt earned his third top-five of the year. As he did in Race 1, Rob Tarlton claimed the Master’s class victory ahead of his brother Thomas while White and Robert Perlmutter battled fiercely in the first half of the race. The pair swapped control of the final step of the podium multiple times with White taking the spot at the race’s end. Provisionally, Gafrarar moved into third place in the championship standings while Jaxon Bell dropped a spot to fourth. Sebastian Wheldon, with a pair of second-place finishes, maintained his position at the top of the order. The full results for all sessions from Sebring can be found here.
