Oliver Wheldon scored his maiden Skip Barber Race Series victory at Circuit of the Americas while championship-contenders Dean Lambros and Ryan Giannetta joined the Andretti Autosport Junior Development driver on the podium in both races of the Memorial Day weekend doubleheader from Texas. Wheldon started Race 1 from pole and drove a steady 11 laps to secure his first Skip Barber Race Series victory. Championship leader Dean Lambros was second and Ryan Giannetta was third in Saturday’s race. There was a tremendous fight for the final spot in the top five between Alan Orzynski, Ethan Booher, and Caleb Campbell. The trio of drivers finished within one second of each other with Orzynski’s defensive-driving capabilities helping him to secure fifth. Master’s Class driver Thomas Tarlton finished 4th overall, besting his twin brother Rob Tarlton for the win in Masters. Thomas would repeat his performance on Sunday as he again converted a 4th–place overall finish to a Master’s Class win. Like their predecessors racing the Indianapolis 500, the drivers of the Skip Barber Race Series were waiting for Sunday to put on a show, and they delivered. A three-car battle for the win between Wheldon, Giannetta, and Lambros dominated the proceedings with all three drivers exchanging the lead of the race. The trio would race through the esses side-by-side and into the heavy braking zones alongside one another, showcasing extraordinary racecraft and situational awareness at every moment. In the end, it was Wheldon who held off Giannetta by just 0.182 seconds, the closest margin of victory this season. Just as the three-car battle for the win was emerging, Orzynski, Booher, Campbell, and Thomas Nordquist were beginning a scrap of their own as the fight for fifth was once again on. Skip Barber Race Series newcomer Booher was quickly making his presence felt with an impressive display of driving prowess from the debutant. After a sixth-place finish in Race 1, Booher was hungry for his first top-five. As was Campbell, fresh off his first podium at NOLA Motorsports Park, the Canadian had momentum on his side as the four drivers mixed it up at every opportunity. Nordquist, however, was a man on a mission. After starting the race in 12th, he stormed to fifth and was the biggest mover in Race 2. Griffin Yellin, Talley Fare, and Jack Mohrhardt were all two seconds per lap quicker in Race 2 than they were in Race 1, a strong testament to the guidance and training from the Skip Barber Race Series instructors and the drivers’ commitment to improving and adjusting during the race weekend. They all left Circuit of the Americas with a pair of top-ten finishes in hand. Lincoln Day was slated to participate in this round but was unable to after a series of snowstorms left him and his family stuck in their home state of Montana. All the best to Lincoln and the Day family and we look forward to seeing them soon. The next round of the Skip Barber Race Series is scheduled for June 14 – 16 at VIRginia International Raceway. The Series will share the track with USF Juniors where multiple graduates of the Skip Barber Race Series, including reigning champion Sebastian Wheldon and Skip Barber Racing’s Jeshua Alianell are set to compete.
