The NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series ventured from the stadium-like confines of the Indianapolis Road Course last week to the tree-lined, 2.45-mile circuit, that is Watkins Glen International in New York. Nestled a stone’s throw from the state park that bears the same name, Watkins Glen has been a staple of the NASCAR calendar since it became a permanent fixture on the schedule in 1986. Among the many Skip Barber Racing School graduates in the field, AJ Allmendinger and Bubba Wallace stood out as two of the strongest in Sunday’s Go Bowling at the Glen. Allmendinger started the 90-lap race in sixth and was a persistent factor in the top five throughout the afternoon. He secured points at the end of Stage 1 and Stage 2 with fifth place finishes at both marks, before climbing to fourth by day’s end. This was Allmendinger’s best result on a non-superspeedway track and it beats his previous best of sixth at Sonoma Raceway. With the Charlotte Roval still ahead, Allmendinger has a great opportunity to find his first NASCAR Cup Series win of the season. While road course racing has been a highlight of Allmendinger’s career, it has not been the same story for 23XI’s Bubba Wallace. Previously, Wallace had struggled to crack into the top 25 on road courses for most of his NASCAR Cup Series career. Since spending time with the Skip Barber Racing School in 2021, his road course results have drastically improved, culminating in a twelfth-place finish at Watkins Glen. Perhaps more importantly for Wallace, he gathered five stage points throughout the race, leaving him 32 points above the playoff cut line with one regular season race remaining. Other Skip Barber graduates include Joey Logano (10th), Ross Chastain (18th), and Michael McDowell (36th), who fell victim to an electrical problem after leading in the early portion of the race. In the NASCAR Xfinity Series race, graduates Chastain (4th), John Hunter Nemechek (6th), Chandler Smith (8th), Jeb Burton (10th), and Austin Hill (14th) filled the top fifteen. Earlier in the week, the Camping World SRX Series ended its 2023 season at Lucas Oil Speedway with Skip Barber Racing School graduate Ryan Newman being crowned the champion. The Rocket Man clinched the title after Heat 1 and narrowly missed the podium in Main Event with a fourth-place finish. In Wisconsin, SRO America descended upon Road America where there was no shortage of Skip Barber Racing School graduates collecting podiums and solid results. Among them was Westin Workman who finished on the podium in Race 1 of the Toyota GR Cup North America weekend and added a 4th-place result in Race 2. Current Skip Barber Race Series championship leader Jaxon Bell was 7th in the opening race. The Skip Barber Race Team was also in action competing with four cars in TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School and a single car in GT4 America. Brazilian Celso Neto put an exclamation mark on the weekend with his seventh podium of the year in TC. Jeremiah Burton, meanwhile, added another top-five to his rookie campaign. Since joining the team at Circuit of the Americas, he has secured a top-five result in 66% of his races. Looking ahead to next weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series return to the Daytona International Speedway. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge heads to VIRginia International Raceway, a track close to our hearts at the Skip Barber Racing School as our new off-road academy has recently begun operations at the fan-favorite motorsports complex.
