A pair of Skip Barber Racing School graduates claimed victory in one of North America’s most legendary endurance races over the weekend. Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves and sportscar ace Colin Braun won the 2023 edition of Petit Le Mans, the final race of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season. The Meyer Shank Racing team entrusted Braun to finish the grueling ten-hour race at Road Atlanta. With over 50 cars on the 2.540-mile circuit and limited opportunities to pass slower traffic, all under the cover of darkness, the final stint of Petit Le Mans is one of the most difficult in racing. With thirty minutes left to run, Braun pounced on the competition on a restart to snag the overall lead of the race as the field climbed the hill at Turn 1. Braun safely navigated traffic while keeping others in the GTP class behind him. A pair of late cautions made his life easier as the race ended behind the safety car. It was the third IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship win of the season for Braun after previous triumphs at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. For Castroneves, it was his second victory of the season as the team’s dedicated endurance driver. Braun and Castroneves were joined by teammate Tom Blomqvist for Petit Le Mans. Elsewhere in GTP, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Josef Newgarden made his debut in the premiere class with Porsche Penske Motorsports and finished fourth overall. It was a great weekend for graduates in the GT classes as Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow, driving for fellow Skip Barber graduate Paul Miller claimed the GT Daytona title. Robby Foley finished second in class in the Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT3 on Saturday but clinched the Grand Sport championship in Michelin Pilot Challenge on Friday. In Nevada, the Round of 8 for the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Cup Series began at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Skip Barber Racing School graduate and playoff contender Chris Buescher finished the afternoon in tenth while Ross Chastain ended the day in fifth. John Hunter Nemechek had yet another strong race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with a second-place result that leaves him a staggering 47 points above the cutline and in a more than favorable position to make the Championship Four after the next two races at Homestead-Miami and Martinsville. Graduate Chandler Smith finished fourth while fellow Skip Barber alumni Austin Hill was seventh. Half of the drivers remaining in the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs are graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School with Nemechek, Hill, and Smith being joined by Sammy Smith. Looking ahead, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will lock in its Championship Four next weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway with Skip Barber graduates Christian Eckes and Carson Hocevar on the cusp of a shot at the title in Phoenix. The Craftsman Truck Series will be joined by the Xfinity Series and Cup Series at Homestead, the latter two series will lock in its respective Championship Fours at Martinsville a week later. Finally, Formula 1 will return to North America for the United States Grand Prix from Circuit of the Americas, one of the many tracks where the Skip Barber Racing School offers a wide array of programs. Graduate Sergio Perez will carry the Skip Barber Racing School banner for that event.
