Skip Barber Racing School graduate Michael McDowell dominated the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, leading 54 of the race’s 82 laps and turning his precarious playoff bubble position into a ticket to the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. McDowell becomes one of a select few drivers to have won at the Brickyard in Indianapolis as well as the Daytona 500. McDowell started the race fourth and quickly made himself a factor, passing Chase Elliott on the opening lap before setting his sights on Daniel Suarez and Tyler Reddick who he would pass just a handful of laps later. Once in the lead, McDowell cruised to the end of Stage One, securing his first career stage win. Later in the race, McDowell took advantage of a squabbling Brad Keselowski and Suarez to finish 2nd in Stage Two. Shortly after the beginning of the final stage, McDowell would retake the lead, passing Denny Hamlin on the inside of Turn 11. As he did in Stage One, McDowell would cruise to the finish, winning his second career race and capping off one of the most impressive drives of his career. Earlier in the week, the Camping World SRX Series took to the legendary track of Eldora Speedway for the series’ first dirt race of the season. Like he has all year, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Ryan Newman showed why he’s the championship leader, placing on the podium in Heat 2 and the feature race. Also in the main event, Skip Barber alumni Hailie Deegan, scored her season-best finish of 2nd. A 4th-place finish from Bobby LaBonte marked the third Skip Barber Racing School graduate in the top five. Aside from Newman, LaBonte had one of the best nights of any driver with a 2nd in Heat 1 and a 5th in Heat 2. Back in Indianapolis where the NTT IndyCar Series ran the Gallagher Grand Prix, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Alexander Rossi’s 5th-place finish stood as the best result among the six SBRS alumni on the grid. It was a difficult race for other Skip Barber alumni including Josef Newgarden (25th) and Colton Herta (13th) who both suffered from contact early in the race. Looking ahead, the NASCAR Cup Series will venture to Watkins Glen for its second consecutive road course event. The Camping World SRX Series will close out its 2023 season at Lucas Oil Speedway on Thursday. Finally, Fanatec GT World Challenge America heads to Road America where the Skip Barber Race Team will field entries in both GT4 America and TC America presented by the Skip Barber Racing School.
