Few came close to challenging Skip Barber graduate Josef Newgarden over the course of the Hy-Vee IndyCar Race Weekend. The reigning Indianapolis 500 winner swept the twin races in convincing fashion and remains the sole driver to win on an oval in this year’s NTT IndyCar season. Even with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Zac Brown Band, Carrie Underwood, and Kenny Chesney performing, it was still Newgarden’s show that drew the most awe. Leading 341 laps over the course of the dual 250-lap events, Newgarden controlled the field for an astounding 68% of the racing over the weekend. In both races, he managed to lap all but five of the 28 cars on the 7/8-mile oval just east of Des Moines, Iowa. Fellow Skip Barber Racing School graduate Alexander Rossi moved from his twenty-first place starting position to finish tenth in the first race of the event. Colton Herta, meanwhile, was the strongest Andretti Autosport driver in the second race, with a seventh-place finish. At Stafford Motor Speedway, where Skip Barber Racing was on-hand to support SRX’s logistical operations, graduate Ryan Newman won the main event and moved into the championship lead. Marco Andretti (3rd) and Ken Schrader (4th) added two more top-five results for Skip Barber graduates in the feature race. Hailie Deegan racked up two more top-ten finishes with a fourth-place result in Heat 1 and an eighth-place finish in the main event. On the other side of the Nutmeg State is Lime Rock Park, where the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship held its first of two GT-only races. Skip Barber Racing School graduate Trent Hindman was the best-placed graduate with a third-place finish in GT Daytona. Hindman and co-driver Alan Brynjolfsson climbed 11 positions throughout the course of the race. The weekend ended with the NASCAR Cup Series’ visit to Long Pond, Pennsylvania, and the Tricky Triangle of Pocono Raceway. SBRS graduate Bubba Wallace (11th) just missed the top ten but collected points at the end of both stages. Team Penske’s Joey Logano looked to be the strongest Skip Barber graduate in the field after winning stage one, but his day ended early following a crash during one of the race’s hectic, often four wide, restarts. Looking ahead, the NASCAR Cup Series goes to Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400 on Sunday afternoon. The NTT IndyCar Series takes a weekend off before going to Nashville the following week. SRX will head to Motor Mile Speedway in Virginia for its Thursday-night festivities.
