A pair of Skip Barber Racing School graduates will have the opportunity to capture the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series titles this weekend at Phoenix Raceway. In the Xfinity Series, John Hunter Nemechek will enter the season finale as one of four drivers with a shot at the crown after securing a position in the Championship Four at Martinsville. With seven wins this season and a staggering 24 top-ten results, Nemechek has consistently stood out among the rest of the NASCAR Xfinity Series field. Two of his previous wins this season came at Martinsville and New Hampshire along with top-five results at Richmond Raceway, Dover Motor Speedway, and Bristol Motor Speedway. Nemechek has demonstrated exceptional ability at short tracks this year. He finished sixth at Phoenix Raceway in the Spring, the best result of any of the Championship Four contenders. Fellow Skip Barber graduate Austin Hill narrowly missed the chance to fight for a title after a last lap crash that saw his hopes dashed. Sammy Smith also fell short of reaching the Championship Four with a strong sixth-place result in the Round of 8. On Friday night, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Carson Hocevar will pursue the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series title before he begins his full-time adventure in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2024. Chris Buescher finished the Xfinity 500 in eighth but that was not enough to crack into the Championship Four, ending his remarkable second-half run. Buescher leaped into the playoff picture with three wins in four weekends at the end of the regular season and advanced to the Round of 8 with clutch performances at Bristol and the Charlotte Roval. Skip Barber Racing School graduate Joey Logano finished the day in fifth, Bubba Wallace was eleventh while Ross Chastain was fourteenth on the one-year anniversary of his ‘Hail Melon’ that catapulted him to Phoenix last season. Graduate Harrison Burton was fifteenth, his fourth such result of the season. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will crown its champion on Friday night while the NASCAR Xfinity Series is slated for a Saturday night showdown as a preamble to the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday.
