Alumni of the Skip Barber Racing School claimed podium finishes on the Streets of St. Petersburg, captured stage victories at Circuit of the Americas, and began preparations for their return to Formula 1. In the NASCAR Cup Series, graduates Michael McDowell (5th), AJ Allmendinger (9th), Bubba Wallace (11th), Kyle Busch (12th), Connor Zilisch (14th), and Joey Logano (15th) finished in the top fifteen on Sunday afternoon. Zilisch’s finishing position does little to accurately represent the day the rookie had, however. Zilisch ran as high as fourth and as low as 37th over the course of the afternoon after being spun on two separate occasions in Turn 1. With 18 laps to go, Zilisch restarted in fourth before finding himself facing the wrong way at the top of the hill after a chain reaction sent him spinning. He fell to 32nd before climbing 18 positions in the final 16 laps to finish 14th. Meanwhile, alumni Ross Chastain claimed the Stage 1 victory, as did fellow graduate Austin Hill in Saturday’s NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race. Hill finished the day in second place, one spot ahead of Sammy Smith. Chastain, pulling double duty this weekend, finished ninth in the NOAPS race. Meanwhile, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series was in St. Petersburg, Florida, for an 80-lap showdown on the 1.80-mile course. Chandler Smith’s fourth-place result stood as the best finish for Skip Barber alumni, but a ninth-place finish for sportscar ace Colin Braun was just as impressive. Braun, who was making his first Truck Series start in 15 years, was driving Ram’s “Free Agent” truck. In INDYCAR, graduates Kyle Kirkwood (4th) and Josef Newgarden (7th) finished in the top ten on Sunday. In INDY NXT, alumni Max Taylor started the season opener from the pole position and finished second. Graduate Myles Rowe was sixth, and he has now finished in the top ten in 14 of the last 15 INDY NXT races. Continuing down the American open-wheel ladder to USF2000, former Skip Barber Race Series driver Ryan Giannetta climbed seven spots in the opening race of the season to finish seventh. Fellow Race Series competitor Thomas Nordquist also had a strong run in Race 1, climbing five positions. The weekend was capped off by alumni Justin Adakonis in Mazda MX-5 Cup, who earned the victory in Race 2. Graduates Tristan McKee (10th) and Gresham Wagner (7th) joined him in the top ten. Also in action this weekend was Skip Barber Racing which began its World Racing League season at Barber Motorsports Park.Saverio Striglia III, Dylan Weber, and Ryan Emani scored a pair of top-five finishes in their first weekend of proffesional racing. Finally, Skip Barber Racing School alumni Sergio Perez and Cadillac sit on the precipice of their debut race in Formula 1 as a pairing, with the Australian Grand Prix set for this weekend. As does Colton Herta who readies for his Formula 2 debut.
