Nine Skip Barber Racing School alumni finished in the top fifteen of Sunday’s Daytona 500, including Tyler Reddick (2nd) and Jimmie Johnson (3rd). For Johnson, his third-place finish was the best of his NASCAR Cup Series career since 2020 and his best finish in the Daytona 500 since winning in 2013. Illustrative of the kind of evening it was, only two of the 41 drivers who took the green flag on Sunday afternoon avoided being involved in an incident. One of whom was Skip Barber alumni Chris Buescher (10th), who earned his fourth top ten finish in the Daytona 500. Graduates John Hunter Nemechek (5th) and Erik Jones (12th) added to Legacy Motor Club’s successful weekend with top fifteen finishes. Elsewhere in Sunday’s top ten were alumni Alex Bowman (6th) and 2021 Daytona 500 winner Austin Cindric (8th). Graduate Michael McDowell, with his new team Spire Motorsports, finished 11th, and Austin Dillon was 14th. Other notable stories from Daytona included Skip Barber Racing School graduates sweeping the Duels at Daytona, with Bubba Wallace and Cindric winning the weekend’s opening races. In the NASCAR Xfinity Series, graduate Harrison Burton finished sixth for AM Racing, helping them earn their best finish at an oval track. Next weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will visit Atlanta Motor Speedway. Skip Barber graduate Austin Hill is the reigning winner of the Xfinity Series race at Atlanta, and fellow alumni Kyle Busch is the reigning winner of the Craftsman Truck Series race at the 1.5-mile track.
