Skip Barber Racing School graduate Ross Chastain won the NASCAR Cup Series season finale from Phoenix Raceway on Sunday. Chastain, who credits his improvement on road courses to his time spent with instructors from the Skip Barber Racing School, was one of four graduates to finish the NASCAR Cup Series Championship race in the top ten. Chastain spent the entire afternoon at the sharp end of the field with strong finishes of third and second in Stage 1 and Stage 2, respectively. Fellow Skip Barber alumni Chris Buescher won Stage 2 before ending his evening with a fifth-place result. Bubba Wallace, meanwhile, opened the day with a fourth-place finish in Stage 1 before ending his 2023 season with another top ten. The final Skip Barber Racing School alumni in the top ten was Michael McDowell who climbed ten spots to finish in ninth. Throughout the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, Skip Barber Racing School graduates amassed wins in 27% of the season’s races. Beginning with Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s triumph in the Daytona 500 and ending with Chastain’s win from Phoenix, seven different graduates scored at least one win. Those seven drivers found success at a variety of tracks including Tyler Reddick and AJ Allmendinger winning on road courses and Chris Buescher scoring back-to-back wins at the short track of Richmond Raceway and the superspeedway of Michigan. In total, 11 races of the season were won by Skip Barber Racing School graduates. The accolades of alumni in the NASCAR Xfinity Series are even more impressive as six graduates collected an astonishing 16 wins, nearly 50% of the entire 2023 season. The first nine races of the season were swept by Skip Barber Racing School graduates with Austin Hill claiming three victories ahead of John Hunter Nemechek’s two, as Sammy Smith, Chandler Smith, Jeb Burton, and AJ Allmendinger each added one win to kick start the year. In the 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Christian Eckes and Carson Hocevar accumulated eight wins including Eckes’ triumph in the final race of the season. Carson Hocevar and John Hunter Nemechek each made Championship Four appearances. Graduates Eckes and Matt Crafton made it to the Round of 8 and Round of 10, respectively. Austin Hill, Sammy Smith, and Chandler Smith all made it to the Round of 8 in the Xfinity Series. Half of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoff grid were Skip Barber graduates including Stenhouse Jr., Bubba Wallace, Chris Buescher, and Tyler Reddick, the last two making it to the Round of 8. Finally, at Circuit of the Americas, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Maria Mejia was crowned the champion of the 2023 International GT Stuttgart Cup.
