In an outstandingly successful weekend, graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School claimed victories in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship from VIRginia International Raceway, the NASCAR Cup Series from Daytona International Speedway, and clinched the 2024 USF Juniors title in Portland. Beginning on the West Coast, where the NTT IndyCar Series and USF Juniors spent the weekend at Portland International Raceway and Skip Barber Racing School alumni Max Taylor secured the USF Juniors crown and a sizeable scholarship package that he can put towards an entry in USF2000 next season. Reigning Skip Barber Race Series champion Sebastian Wheldon ended his rookie season in USF Juniors with an impressive finish of third in the standings. Fellow Skip Barber Racing School graduate Jack Jeffers was fifth in the championship at the close of the season. Skip Barber Racing’s Jeshua Alianell closed the curtain on his season with a top ten finish in Race 3 from Portland. In Sunday’s main event, five Skip Barber Racing School graduates secured top ten finishes headlined by Josef Newgarden’s third place run, his fifth podium finish of the season. Other Skip Barber Racing School alumni in the top ten were Colton Herta (4th), Santino Ferrucci (8th), Graham Rahal (9th), and Kyle Kirkwood (10th). Skip Barber Racing School graduate Myles Rowe finished seventh in the 35-lap Indy NXT race. The NASCAR Cup Series returned to Daytona International Speedway for a Saturday night showdown on the high banks that was won by Skip Barber Racing School alumni Harrison Burton. The win was Burton’s first in the NASCAR Cup Series, the 100th for legendary outfit Wood Brothers Racing, and the first Cup Series victory for a driver born in the 21st century. Burton was helped to the line thanks to a push from fellow Skip Barber graduate Parker Retzlaff. Retzlaff went on to finish seventh and score his first NASCAR Cup Series top-ten result in just his second start. Sixty percent of the finishers in the top fifteen of Saturday’s race were graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School with the aforementioned Burton and Retzlaff being joined by Kyle Busch (2nd), Bubba Wallace (6th), Chris Buescher (10th), Carson Hocevar (11th), Ross Chastain (12th), Zane Smith (13th), and John Hunter Nemechek (15th). IMSA’s Michelin GT Weekend offered up an action-packed weekend of racing from Skip Barber’s home track of VIRginia International Raceway. A Skip Barber Racing School Roush Stage 3 Performance Mustang led the field to the green flag in Sunday’s IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship Race that was won by Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers – both of whom are graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School. Alumni Kenton Koch claimed the victory in the GT Daytona class. Skip Barber graduates Misha Goikhberg (3rd), and Robby Foley (5th), also finished in the top five of Sunday’s race. In IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, Skip Barber Racing School alumni Spencer Pumpelly was victorious ahead of fellow graduate Steven McAleer. Lastly, alumni Westin Workman netted himself a pair of top five finishes in Mazda MX-5 Cup headlined by a second-place finish in Race 1. Lastly, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Sergio Perez finished the Dutch Grand Prix in sixth.
