Six Skip Barber Racing School graduates finished in the top ten of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race from Sonoma Raceway while alumni in Road America and Mid-Ohio captured wins and podium finishes in a variety of series. Alumni Michael McDowell once again had success at a road course with his second-place finish at Sonoma Raceway, one of Skip Barber’s eight home permanent venues. That result is his season-best finish and his highest finishing position since winning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course last year. In addition to McDowell, graduates Chris Buescher (3rd), Ross Chastain (5th), AJ Allmendinger (6th), Tyler Reddick (8th), and Todd Gilliland (10th) also finished in the top ten. In addition to their strong finishes, Reddick won Stage 1 while Buescher won Stage 2. Graduate Joey Logano started the race from pole. In the NASCAR Xfinity Series, alumni Austin Hill (5th), Chandler Smith (7th), and John Hunter Nemechek (8th) were the highest-finishing Skip Barber graduates. Meanwhile, in Road America, the NTT IndyCar Series headlined an action-packed weekend of racing at America’s National Park of Speed. Reigning Indianapolis 500 winner and Skip Barber Racing School graduate Josef Newgarden was second in the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. Graduates Kyle Kirkwood (5th), Colton Herta (6th), and Graham Rahal (10th) also claimed top-ten finishes. A special congratulations to Skip Barber Racing School corporate partner Andretti Autosport whose driver Jamie Chadwick became the first woman to earn pole on a road course in INDY NXT and became just the third woman to win a race in the series. USF 2000 was also on track at Road America for a double-header of races where Skip Barber Racing School alumni Max Taylor earned a podium in Race 1 followed by a victory in Race 2. Graduate Hudson Schwartz also claimed two top-ten finishes at Road America. Lastly, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge headlined a weekend of sportscar racing at Mid-Ohio where Skip Barber Racing’s No. 16 Skip Barber Racing School Aston Martin completed a flawless four hours of racing with strong efforts from Ken Fukuda, Will Lambros, and series debutant Celso Neto. Alumni Connor Zilisch captured one win and a top-five finish in the pair of races for the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup series. Fellow Skip Barber graduate Westin Workman was ninth in Race 1 and improved to fourth in Race 2. In the inaugural race of the Ford Mustang Challenge, Skip Barber Racing School instructor Mike Stillwagon earned a second-place finish in the Legend’s Class. Looking ahead to this weekend, the headlining performance will be the 92nd 24 Hours of Le Mans where Skip Barber Racing School graduates Colin Braun, Scott Huffaker, and Jordan Taylor will be among the 186 drivers searching for glory in sportscar racing’s most prestigious race. The Skip Barber Race Series will return to action from VIRginia International Raceway alongside USF Juniors and Porsche Sprint Challenge North America. Finally, the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series will visit Iowa Speedway.
