This past weekend Skip Barber Racing School graduates advanced to the next round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs in Bristol, claimed a championship title at the highest level of sportscar competition, and stood on the podium at one of the world’s most iconic racing venues. The action began in the Appalachian Mountains where the legendary Bristol Motor Speedway sits tucked in the hills of Eastern Tennessee. The 0.533-mile concrete coliseum would serve as the final race in the Round of 16, with four driver’s playoff futures on the chopping block. One of those drivers whose future lay in a precarious position was Skip Barber graduate Bubba Wallace. With the team’s back against the wall and under the watchful gaze of team owner Michael Jordan, they settled into a rhythm. They opened the evening with a strong finish of third in Stage One that netted the team a crucial eight points. Parlay that with a top-fifteen finish at the end of the night and Wallace had secured his place in the Round of 12. Moving on in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs alongside Wallace are fellow Skip Barber graduates Ross Chastain and Chris Buescher, the latter leaving Bristol with a top-five finish, continuing his scorching hot run in the final weeks of summer. The NASCAR Cup Series’ Saturday night showdown in Bristol paved the way for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship to take centerstage on Sunday afternoon, and what better venue to host a Sunday matinee than the Brickyard. The biggest milestone for graduates came as soon as the green flag dropped on IMSA’s return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. By virtue of starting the final sprint race of the season, the dynamic duo of Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow, both Skip Barber graduates, clinched the WeatherTech Sprint Cup title. Still hungry to secure the season-long championship, Sellers and Snow added a seventh podium finish to their season’s resume. A massive congratulations from everyone at the Skip Barber Racing School to Madison, Bryan, and the team at Paul Miller Racing. With both drivers and team owner Paul Miller, having graduated from the Skip Barber Racing School, we know who we’ll be cheering for at Petit Le Mans! Elsewhere in IMSA, the GTP class put on an amazing show with Skip Barber graduates featured in the mix of North America’s top sportscar category. At the end of the two-hour and forty-minute race, Skip Barber graduate Connor De Phillippi, alongside teammate Nick Yelloly, secured the final step of the podium for BMW M Team RLL. A top-five result for graduate Ricky Taylor put him and teammate Filipe Albuquerque just three points out of the lead of the GTP standings. With three teams separated by just five points, the season finale at Road Atlanta will be a showdown. Looking ahead to next weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series will start the Round of 12 at Texas Motor Speedway and Skip Barber graduate Sergio Perez will travel to Japan for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. Finally, the Skip Barber Race Team will return to action at Sebring for the TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School and GT4 America races at the famed track.
