Any NASCAR Cup Series race on a road course means Skip Barber Racing School graduate AJ Allmendinger will be a factor and the Californian, who got his start in racing in the Skip Barber National Series and Skip Barber Pro Series, once again proved why. Leading a race-high 46 laps enroute to victory, Allmendinger dominated Sunday’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 from Charlotte Motor Speedway. Elsewhere in the NASCAR Cup Series field, graduate Chris Buescher advanced to the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs after a top-ten finish. Alongside Allmendinger, Buescher was one of four Skip Barber graduates who finished in the top ten on Sunday, joined by Joey Logano (5th) and Ross Chastain (10th). Unfortunately for Chastain, his tenth-place finish was not good enough to overcome the deficit he had found himself in following an early wreck in last week’s race from Talladega Superspeedway, meaning his playoff run comes to an end at the conclusion of the Round of 12. Likewise, an incident in this week’s race dashed the playoff hopes of Skip Barber Racing School graduate Bubba Wallace. Wallace was spun in the braking zone of the backstretch chicane after another driver missed his braking point, sending the car spinning into Wallace. The contact knocked Wallace out of the top half of the running order, and he was unable to claw back the lost ground in the final twenty laps of the race. The playoff prospects of Skip Barber graduates in the NASCAR Xfinity Series look strong, however. John Hunter Nemechek, Austin Hill, Chandler Smith, and Sammy Smith, all advanced into the Round of 8 after Charlotte. Nemechek (+37 points) and Hill (+21 points) will start the penultimate round of the playoffs in the strongest position with a comfortable margin above the cutline. GT World Challenge America held its season finale at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, an eight-hour endurance race that also served as a round on the Intercontinental GT World Challenge calendar. Skip Barber Racing School graduate Madison Snow with Wright Motorsports won the GTWCA Pro class while fellow graduate Colin Braun with Crowdstrike by Riley won the Pro-Am class of the endurance race. Also at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway over the weekend was Toyota GR Cup North America where a plethora of Skip Barber Racing School graduates competed. Current Skip Barber Race Series competitors Jaxon Bell and Spencer Schmidt saw action with Bell scoring his first podium of the season with a third-place finish in the Nashville makeup race. Meanwhile, James Klimas made his series debut over the weekend in a GR86 entered by the Skip Barber Race Team. Finally, Ashley Freiberg, a graduate of the Skip Barber National Series, won the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America championship in the series’ 991 class. Freiberg won seven races over the course of the season. On the horizon for next week, the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series will head west to Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will close the curtain on its 2023 season with Petit Le Mans from Road Atlanta.
