The first day of autumn arrived over the weekend but the change in season failed to yield a change in temperature in the air over the Texas Motor Speedway, where NASCAR Cup Series drivers on Sunday faced temperatures approaching 100 degrees. Leading the field of 36 to the green flag in the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 was Skip Barber Racing School graduate Bubba Wallace. The previous day, Wallace had scored his first career pole position with a stellar lap to place his No. 23 McDonald's Toyota Camry on pole by 0.039 seconds. Wallace’s speed, along with the heat, would stay into Sunday as he led both a race-high and career-high 111 laps throughout the afternoon before finishing the day in third. After a dramatic entrance into the Round of 12 at Bristol, Wallace and the team at 23XI proved they have the pace to factor into the Round of 8. Just ahead of Wallace as they crossed the checkered flag was fellow Skip Barber Racing School graduate Ross Chastain. Chastain started his race in fifth and was a constant factor in the top ten for much of the afternoon before finding even more speed in the final stage. With a well-earned finish at Texas and the Charlotte Roval still on the horizon for Chastain, his Round of 8 prospects look strong. One man whose Round of 8 prospects look even stronger is John Hunter Nemechek. With his seventh win of the season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, the 26-year-old has clinched his spot in the next round of the Xfinity playoffs. Nemechek’s win on Saturday headlined an excellent weekend for Skip Barber Racing School graduates in the NASCAR Xfinity Series as Sammy Smith, Chandler Smith, and Austin Hill all finished the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 with top-ten results. That meant 40% of Saturday’s top ten were graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School. Away from Texas and down to Florida we find Sebring International Raceway where SRO America descended upon the iconic track for a host of series, including GT World Challenge America, TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School, and Toyota GR Cup North America. In GT World Challenge America, Skip Barber graduate Madison Snow, fresh off securing the IMSA WeatherTech Sprint Cup title, swept the weekend alongside co-drive Jan Heylan in their Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R. Current Skip Barber Race Series championship contender Jaxon Bell spent his weekend competing in Toyota GR Cup North America where he finished Race 1 with a strong eighth-place result after starting thirteenth in the uber-competitive series. Bell executed a stellar two-for-one pass into the high-speed turn one that vaulted him into the top ten. On the horizon, next weekend is the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Talladega Superspeedway. It’s an otherwise quiet weekend as Formula 1 and SRO America take time off before returning the following weekend. There will, however, be plenty of automotive content as Porsche is slated to host its biannual Rennsport Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
