Austin, Texas – An hour-long rain delay postponed Race 1 this afternoon at Circuit of The Americas. Eric Powell started third on the grid, then advanced to first in his #92 Skip Barber Racing School Honda, leading for half the race. “The team performed so well amidst the continual challenges of uncertainty from the weather and trying to maximize the setup. I’m proud of the performance of the crew, the drivers, and the cars were great.” – Kirk Dooley, Chief Operating Officer of Skip Barber Racing School. Powell got a good start, Mike Lamarra defended into turn one, and Powell swung back to the outside. He stayed around the outside and passed Lamarra in turn two. Powell patient through the esses, setting himself up to get power out of turn nine to then give TC leader Josef Federl. Powell then got around the rest of the TCX cars, some spinning out in front of him. His approach was conservative, hunting for enough grip. “The Honda Racing Civic Type R was a joy to drive. I mean, inherently, front-wheel-drive cars have the advantage in the wet, so that was on our side today and being in the Honda is a bonus. The cars have been flawless since it was delivered. It was interesting with the rain, the changing levels of water on the track, and the visibility mostly from behind, my visibility from the front was fine, so I just wanted to play it a little on the safe side to make sure I was only doing what I needed to do.” – Eric Powell Powell and Jeff Ricca had a good little battle, passing each other a few times, but ultimately Ricca took the lead, and Powell placed second.
