After sweeping the weekend at Circuit of the Americas, Oliver Wheldon is entering the next round of the 2024 Skip Barber Race Series riding a wave of momentum into VIRginia International Raceway, but the field is closer than ever as the season approaches its halfway point. After six races in the 2024 Skip Barber Race Series the top four drivers are separated by just 17 points. With 35 points awarded to the winner of each race, everything, including the Skip Barber Racing School scholarship to compete in USF Juniors, is up for grabs. The season has seen three different winners; Dean Lambros who swept the opening three rounds; Ryan Giannetta who broke through for his maiden win at NOLA Motorsports Park; and the aforementioned Wheldon. Multiple drivers, including Thomas Nordquist and Caleb Campbell, have scored podium finishes and have their sights set on continued development in the second half of the season. “My season has gone very well,” Nordquist explained. “My goals for the second half are to keep improving my fundamentals and race craft and hopefully secure another podium.” Alan Orzynski, fresh off his season-best finish of fifth at Circuit of the Americas, is looking forward to his first visit to VIRginia International Raceway. Since the start of the season, Orzynski has been working on decreasing the amount of time it takes for him to get up to speed on new tracks and he believes he has made significant progress. “Honestly all of it,” Orzynski said when asked if there were any parts of VIR that he was excited to race on. “The whole track has its attributes but I’m expecting the section between Turn 13 and Turn 17 to be especially satisfying to compete in.” Talley Fare is proud of the steady improvements he has been making in his driving and is now aiming to be fighting at the front of the pack as the summer rolls on. Griffin Yellin left Circuit of the Americas with a pair of top-ten finishes in hand, and he too will be visiting VIR for the first time this weekend. “I think the season has gone alright, it didn’t start out the way I hoped but I’m still learning and making progress race by race in my first season in cars,” Yellin said. “My goals for the rest of the season are to keep improving and keep getting more comfortable with the car.” A strong round at VIR could vault Jack Mohrhardt to as high as fifth in the standings. Like Yellin, Mohrhardt is coming off a double top-ten finish at COTA. After an impressive sixth-place finish in his Skip Barber Race Series debut, Ethan Booher is returning to the track where his Skip Barber Racing School journey began. Having completed his Three-Day Racing School and Advanced Coaching at VIR prior to his Race Series debut at COTA, Booher will have his sights set on the top five in just his second race weekend. Skip Barber Racing driver Alex Garcia will expand his motorsports portfolio from sportscar racing in Toyota GR Cup North America and TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School to include Formula cars in the Skip Barber Race Series. This weekend at VIRginia International Raceway will mark the Floridian's debut in the series. Returning to the Skip Barber Race Series will be Robert Perlmutter. Given the nickname “Polemutter” last season for his strong qualifying performances, he will look to shake up the Master’s Class which has been dominated by the twin brothers of Rob and Thomas Tarlton. Lincoln Day will return to the grid after missing the previous round at Circuit of the Americas due to weather disrupting his travel plans. He has two top-ten finishes to start his sophomore campaign in the Skip Barber Race Series and continues to make tremendous strides in 2024. In addition to the Skip Barber Race Series, USF Juniors will also be on-track at VIRginia International Raceway where 2023 Skip Barber Race Series champion Sebastian Wheldon and 2023 runner-up Jeshua Alianell will compete.
