A Skip Barber Racing School graduate solidified his status as a racing icon by claiming his second-consecutive Indianapolis 500 victory on Sunday. Skip Barber Racing School graduate Josef Newgarden was a rookie in the 2012 Indianapolis 500, and it would be over 4,000 days before he kissed the yard of bricks as a winner of the famed race. Contrast that with the 364 days it took for Newgarden to become a two-time winner after a last-lap pass on Sunday sealed his victory in the 108th Indianapolis 500. After starting on the front row, Newgarden led 26 laps throughout the afternoon. Fellow Skip Barber Racing School graduates Alexander Rossi (4th), Kyle Kirkwood (7th), Santino Ferruci (8th), and Conor Daly (10th) also finished in the top ten. All of the aforementioned graduates led at least one lap in the race and Daly, who started 29th, was the biggest mover in the race, gaining 19 spots over the 200 laps. While rain pushed back the start of the 108th Indianapolis 500, it brought an early end to NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600. Mother nature called a halt to the proceedings of NASCAR’s longest race after 249 of the scheduled 400 laps had been completed. At the time the race was called, Skip Barber Racing School graduates Tyler Reddick (4th), Ross Chastain (8th), and Alex Bowman (9th) were in the top ten. Meanwhile, in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, 60% of the drivers in the top ten of Saturday’s BetMGM 300 were graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School including Brandon Jones (2nd), Sammy Smith (3rd), AJ Allmendinger (5th), Kyle Busch (6th), Josh Williams (8th), and Noah Gragson (10th). Skip Barber alumni Matt Mills recorded his career-best finish of 4th in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ North Carolina Education Lottery 200 on Friday night. As Newgarden continued to build on his celebrity status in Indianapolis, another Skip Barber Racing School graduate, and celebrity in his own right, was competing at Circuit of the Americas. Legendary actor and Skip Barber alumni Patrick Dempsey was busy racing in the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America round at COTA where he scored a top-ten finish in Race 1. Skip Barber Racing School graduate Ashley Freiberg was victorious in Race 1 of the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America weekend with a stellar showing in the GT3 class. Other Skip Barber alumni including Francisco De Jesus, Kevin Woods, and Conrad Geis claimed top-five and podium finishes in their respective classes. Looking ahead to next weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will travel to World Wide Technology Raceway (Gateway) while the NASCAR Xfinity Series will visit Portland International Raceway for its second road course race of the season. Additionally, former Skip Barber Race Series competitor Nathan Byrd will make his NASCAR debut with DGM Racing at Portland.
