On a week when the Skip Barber Race Series kicked off its 2024 season, the graduates of the series were leaving their mark in USF Juniors as Sebastian Wheldon and Jeshua Alianell showed tremendous pace in the pre-season test at NOLA Motorsports Park. Sebastian Wheldon finished each of the five test sessions in the top five, starting the week off with a bang by topping the charts in Test Session 1 by nearly three-tenths of a second. Jeshua Alianell adapted quickly to the Tatuus JR-23, finishing Test Session 3 in fifth. Skip Barber Racing School graduate Jack Jeffers ended the week on a high by leading the final session, besting Wheldon’s time by just 0.0037 seconds. Sergio Perez, himself a graduate of the Skip Barber Race Series, opened his 2024 Formula 1 World Championship with a second-place finish in the Bahrain Grand Prix. In Nevada, NASCAR began its West Coast swing with a stop at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway where John Hunter Nemechek led 99 laps enroute to victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday night. Nemecheck’s triumph preserved the Skip Barber Racing School’s 100%-win rate in the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series season. Graduates Austin Hill (4th), AJ Allmendinger (6th), Sammy Smith (8th), and Brandon Jones (9th) also finished in the top ten. On Sunday, Skip Barber Racing School graduate Tyler Reddick ended the Penzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube in second, joined by Ross Chastain (4th), Noah Gragson (6th), and Joey Logano (9th). Gragson’s sixth-place finish is the best non-superspeedway result of his NASCAR Cup Series career. Coming up this weekend, the NTT IndyCar Series begins its 2024 season with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg as will Indy NXT with graduates Lindsay Brewer and Myles Rowe set to compete. The NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series will travel to Phoenix Raceway and Formula 1 will hop across the Arabian Peninsula to Jeddah for the Formula 1 STC Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
