The NTT IndyCar Series ventured above the 49th parallel to Toronto, Canada, for its sole international visit to the 1.78-mile street course in the shadow of the CN Tower. Skip Barber Racing School graduates Kyle Kirkwood and Colton Herta wasted no time as the Andretti Autosports duo led the opening two practice sessions. Changing conditions in qualifying were perfected by Christian Lundgaard, driving for Skip Barber graduate Bobby Rahal’s Rahal Letterman Lanigan outfit. On Sunday, Herta would climb eleven spots from his starting position to finish the 85-lap race in 3rd, leading fellow Skip Barber graduate Josef Newgarden who rounded out the top five from Toronto. Graham Rahal, meanwhile, flexed the prowess of RLL by turning his last-place starting position into a top-ten finish. A remarkable feat under any circumstances but one that is particularly impressive around the tight street course that Exhibition Place presents to the drivers and teams. Meanwhile, the weather that made IndyCar qualifying so challenging to master on Saturday moved eastward and made racing from New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday impossible for the NASCAR Cup Series. That left the Crayon 301 to be postponed to Monday. Bubba Wallace and Austin Dillon were the best-finishing Skip Barber graduates, with 8th and 9th-place finishes, respectively. They were followed by an additional three graduates in the top fifteen with Erik Jones (11th), Michael McDowell (13th), and Chris Buescher (15th). SRX opened its 2023 season at Stafford Motor Speedway with Skip Barber Racing supporting the series’ operational and logistical programs. Six drivers in the twelve-car field are graduates of Skip Barber Racing School, including Bobby Labonte and Ken Schrader. It was Marco Andretti who led the class to start the evening with a strong result of 3rd in Heat 1, while Labonte (4th) and Tony Kanaan (5th) made it three Skip Barber graduates in the top five of the heat. Ryan Newman won Heat 2 and was 2nd in the main event. Hailie Deegan added another top five for Skip Barber graduates with a 5th-place result in the feature race. Next weekend, Skip Barber graduates in the NTT IndyCar Series will head to Iowa Speedway for a pair of 250-mile races around the Midwest oval. The NASCAR Cup Series, meanwhile, will make a short trip down the coast to the commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Tricky Triangle of Pocono Raceway. SRX will stay at Stafford Motor Speedway this weekend after flooding in Vermont forced the cancellation of the series race at Thunder Road Speedbowl. Finally, the IMSA Weathertech Sports Car Series Championship returns to action at Lime Rock for the first of its two GT-only events.
