Southern Series: McGregor and Anderson New Champions
Lakeville, Conn. (Apr. 25). The winter racing season has drawn to a close and Thomas McGregor and Scott Anderson are the latest Skip Barber Racing School Formula Southern Series and MAZDASPEED Challenge Southern Series winners. Approaching the final weekend, Thomas McGregor held a 17-point lead over Scott Anderson in the Skip Barber Formula Southern Series. Anderson closed the gap in Round 1 when he earned the pole position and finished third on the podium, despite having first lap contact with McGregor. Ashley Freiberg clinched the win with Shelby Blackstock 0.882 seconds behind. In Round 2, Freiberg went on to earn the pole position and ultimately finish in second behind Anderson, with Blackstock landing in third. In the MAZDASPEED Challenge, Thomas McGregor entered the weekend with a four point championship lead over Tyler Cooke and a nine point lead over Scott Anderson. Scott Anderson dominated the weekend, earning both pole positions and both wins. David Levine and Tyler Cooke landed on the podium, placing second and third in Round 1. An unfortunate incident occurred in Race 2 at the front of the pack between David Levine, McGregor and Cooke. Cooke managed to work his way back up to sixth, but Levine and McGregor finished 10th and 11th. Anderson clinched the win and Blackstock and Lucas Bize came in second and third. In the MAZDASPEED Challenge MX5 Master’s Championship race, Steve Randall earned the pole position and led the field all ten laps to the checker, with David Steinschraber and Dr. Mike Edwards rounding out the podium. Steve Randal also clinched the Master/Grand Master championship. David Libby was the other top master of the weekend for the Skip Barber Formula Southern Master’s Championship, not only winning the final Master’s race (with Gus Doppes and Eric Kostamaa in second and third), but the championship as well. Franco Aragones and Jayson Clunie earned the Rookie of Year titles in the 2010-2011 Skip Barber Formula and MAZDASPEED Challenge. Michael Johnson (Skip Barber Formula) and Steve Randall (MAZDASPEED Challenge) were awarded the Most Improved, also earning credits to compete in future Skip Barber Racing School events. Thomas McGregor earned the title of 2010-2011 Skip Barber Racing School Formula Southern Series Champion, with Scott Anderson and Ashley Freiberg finishing second and third in the points. On the MAZDASPEED Challenge Southern Series side, Scott Anderson clinched the 2010-2011 Champion title with Thomas McGregor and Tyler Cooke in second and third. Both championship winners are currently participating in the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda Series, with McGregor sitting second in the points, and Anderson in sixth.
