Summer Series at Lime Rock Park: Anderson and Bloum Hold Points Lead

Tuesday, June 21, 2011 Words by Diana Rice, photos by Kelly Brouillet Lakeville, Conn. (Jun. 21). Round three at Lime Rock Park went very smoothly for all. Jim Craige set a new track record in MX-5, during qualifying, with a 1:03.766 on BFGoodrich Supersport All Season tires. Then rain set in during the day three activities which provided quite a challenge for our drivers. Luckily we were able to fit in a Memorial Race for Sid Brenner on Friday before the rain started. All in all this weekend proved to be yet another exciting event for the season!

Group 1 Race 1 - Skip Barber Formula Summer Series Group one, race one started out with Scott Anderson taking an early commanding lead. The group went single file on the approach to turn four but Colin Wall had a slight spin then continued. Pat Daly spun on the left hander on lap three then continued. Scott Hargrove started to gain on Scott Anderson on lap four looking for a battle. Franco Aragones also caught up to the leader on lap five. By lap ten, Scott Hargrove looked to make a move on Scott Anderson with Franco just behind him. Jim Craige and Jack Mitchell Jr started to battle for fifth position by lap thirteen. Another good battle happened around lap twenty between Gary Vizioli and Chris Brassard for seventh position. A lot of back and forth action happened within the battles for fifth and seventh. Scott Anderson maintained the lead into the checkered flag followed by Scott Hargrove and Franco Aragones. Jose Montiel and Andrew Hobbs had contact on the checkered flag lap while Colin Wall had another slight spin and continued.

Group 1 Race 2 Group one, race two had a clean start to the race. Scott Hargrove got sideways side by side with Scott Anderson. Gary Vizioli spun in turn two, went four off and continued. A good battle for third between Chris Brassard, Franco Aragones, Greg Strelzoff, Pat Daly and Jack Mitchell Jr. happened on lap two. Franco Aragones got caught in a draft “like a nascar race” and was sent back to fifth from third on lap four. They went three wide as they went into turn one. Jack Mitchell Jr. went wide and got hung out to dry on lap seven. The battle for third was still in full effect but Chris Brassard was going just fast enough to keep the others at bay on lap eleven. The checkers came out with Scott Anderson taking the lead followed by Scott Hargrove, Greg Strelzoff and Chris Brassard.

Group 2 Race 1 - MAZDASPEED Challenge Group two, race one was a nice side by side start but went single file as they headed into turn three. There was a mini-breakaway by the Jim Craige and Connor Bloum early on. Connor passed Jim at the start/finish line to take the lead on lap two. The leaders were nose to tail going into turn three on lap four. Connor moved into defensive mode to keep Jim at bay. Jim made a move on lap seven which Connor allows. Jim went a little wide in two but keeps it together to stay ahead of Connor on lap eight. Connor was right on Jim’s bumper looking to make a pass of which he accomplished on lap ten only to have Jim take it back on lap eleven. In the center of the pack, Felix Borodaty made a pass for sixth position sending Zorn Mitrovski back to seventh. Connor and Jim battled it out all down the front straightway with no change in position. Connor closed in on Jim during lap fifteen. Connor took a look on the inside but Jim retained the lead in turn three. Dillon Machavern closed in on Pablo for third. Felix got back up to fifth sending Zoran to sixth. Connor looked to pop on lap seventeen but changed his mind. Dillon made a big dive-bomb in the uphill on lap twenty passing Zoran Mitrovski for fourth. Pablo Cisilino and Dillon Machavern have contact during a battle for third on lap twenty one. Connor dropped two coming out of twelve and Jim took full advantage retaking the lead. Zoran Mitrovski had a spin in the uphill and was down on course. The track stayed green so Jim Craige could take the checkers followed by Connor Bloum and Felix Borodaty.

Group 2 Race 2 Group two, race two also had a clean start. Connor Bloum lead the session going into westbend. Pablo Cisilino went four off in turn one then continued. There was big entry speed by Connor, but a beautiful job made of it on lap two. The top three were equally spaced. A big “high five” to Connor for hitting the apex in three, a puddle, and the apex in four all while keeping it on track during lap seventeen. Connor Bloum took the checkers with Dillon Machavern taking second at the line with a difference of three hundredths of a second.

Group 3 Race 1 Group three, race one started out with David Knight spinning in turn three where he continued and Scott Anderson got left out in the draft by Stefan Rzadzinski which sent Stefan to the lead and Scott to eighth. Tristan Nunez had a big lead heading into turn one on lap three. Pat Daly had a slight spin and continued, also during lap three. Kenton Koch was all over the back of Michael Johnson for fourth position while Scott Anderson came from eighth to third to battle Greg Strelzoff for second position on lap five but he didn’t make the pass until lap six. Pat Daly passed Chris Brassard on lap ten which placed him in the ninth position. Harsha Sen had a mishap on sixteen which sent him into the wall. A full course caution came out on lap eighteen. The green flag flew on lap twenty-three with only three laps to go. Chris Brassard went four off which set the Jack Mitchell Jr. spinning. Scott Anderson got a good run on Tristan down the front straight and made the pass. Tristan made a pop on Scott Anderson right at the start/finish line but Anderson took the win followed by Nunez.

Group 3 Race 2 Group three, race two started with a light sprinkle on the track as they came to the green flag. Scott Anderson took the early lead while Pat Daly went four off and rejoined. Harsha Sen, also, went four off and continued in turn one. It was starting to rain in turn one at this point. Kenton Koch and Franco Aragones had contact and that sent them into the guardrail. Bobby Dans also had a spin at this point which brought out the yellow flag to clean up the track on lap four. The green flag resumed on lap nine where Bobby Dans had another slight spin coming to the green flag. Scott Anderson took the lead with a decent gap between himself and second position Tristan Nunez. The group was side by side, wheel to wheel, hub to hub down into the downhill on lap seventeen. Tristan put a gap between himself and third place Michael Johnson. Greg Strelzoff had a little wiggle coming into turn one but effectively overcame it. The checkered flag came out on lap twenty-two, Scott Anderson won followed by Tristan Nunez & Michael Johnson. Stefan Rzadzinski took fouth from Peter Ludwig right at the line.

Sid Brenner Memorial Race The Sid Brenner Memorial race started out with Peter Brenner waving the green flag. Andrew Hobbs got into Gary Vizioli and Colin Wall went four off to avoid on the first lap. Michael Culver and Keith Watts had contact and Watts went four off to reenter on lap four. A big inside move from Phil Lombardi over Rob Slonaker and a good job with that move on lap eight. Lombardi and Slonaker were in full pursuit of leader Scott Anderson. Scott Anderson drops wheels in westbend, on lap nine, creates dust but leads by a mile. Lombardi took second from Slonaker. Gerardo Bonilla made a pass on Slonaker taking third position on lap ten. Lombardi and Gerardo worked together to catch up to leader Scott Anderson. Colin Wall spun and continued. Michael Culver made a pop before westbend going three wide with Slonaker and Lombardi for second position. Scott Anderson slid into the downhill as he caught up to traffic. Jim Craige caught Gary Vizioli on the front straight, looked to pop but didn’t decide too right now. Scott Anderson made all kinds of tire noise as he slid in the downhill. Gerardo and Lombardi got into some serious traffic going into the downhill, a double pass by the two through the exit of the downhill. Lombardi was all kinds of sideways in the downhill and Gerardo looked to take advantage but no move was made. Christine Brenner waved the checkered flag to Scott Anderson, Phil Lombardi and Gerardo Bonilla.
