Oliver Wheldon claimed his sixth-consecutive Skip Barber Race Series win and Alan Orzynski secured his maiden podium in a thrilling weekend at Road America. By sweeping the weekend, Oliver repeated the feat his brother Sebastian Wheldon achieved during his run for the 2023 title. Dean Lambros, the championship leader entering the weekend, finished second in Race 1 and Race 2, giving him a narrow three-point lead over Oliver Wheldon heading into the final two rounds of the season. It was Caleb Campbell who struck first at Road America, however, with a stellar opening to Race 1 on Saturday. The Canadian assumed the lead of the race from Lambros with a move that marked the beginning of a five-car battle for the win. Wheldon, Lambros, and Campbell would soon be joined by the Master’s Class duo of Rob and Thomas Tarlton. The long straights and hard braking zones of Road America presented ample opportunities for the drivers to demonstrate their race craft as they swapped positions each lap. Wheldon, who started on the inside of the second row moved ahead of Lambros and Campbell and crossed beneath the checkered flag 0.910 seconds ahead of Lambros. Campbell was just 0.337 seconds behind Lambros and Thomas Tarlton, who claimed the Master’s Class victory in both races, was an astonishing 0.012 seconds behind Campbell. After 25 minutes of racing, less than two seconds separated the top five drivers. Ryan Giannetta, who is third in the championship, and Thomas Nordquist were engaged in a fierce race for sixth, which Giannetta eventually won. Jack Mohrhardt, at his home track, improved two positions to finish eighth, he was Race 1’s biggest mover. As he did in Race 1, Campbell pounced at the start, moving from third to first in the opening minutes. A five-car battle in Race 1 turned into a six-car bout in Race 2 as Alan Orzynski, who started from fourth, joined the mix. Orzynski was chasing his first-career Skip Barber Race Series podium and the Mexican driver would not be denied on Sunday as he clinched third place in the Champion’s Class. Other notable achievers included Matan Achituv who passed three drivers to secure his first top ten finish in his second race. Alex Garcia finished in tenth, giving him a pair of top ten finishes on the weekend. The Skip Barber Race Series was the only series of the weekend to not have a Full Course Yellow as a result of on-track incidents, a testament to the excellent race craft of the drivers who enjoyed plenty of green-flag racing as a result. The Skip Barber Race Series will now head to Lime Rock Park on August 21 - 22 before ending the season at VIRginia International Raceway on September 18 - 19.
