After a weekend at one of the series’ longest tracks, the future-generation stars in the Skip Barber Race Series ventured to the legendary 1.53-mile bullring of Lime Rock Park. Following a pair of podiums, including a win, Sebastian Wheldon moved into the lead of the championship standings as Jaxon Bell dropped to third, promoting Jeshua Alianell to second but just two points behind Wheldon. The two-race, mid-week show illustrated the strength and competitiveness of the Skip Barber Race Series field. It featured an excellent drive through the pack by one title contender, a powerful qualifying-to-win conversion from another, and an exemplary exhibition of how to recover from adversity by a third. The tight confines of Lime Rock Park presented no shortage of challenges for the competitors, but many were brave enough to be taking the daunting downhill at Turn 7 flat out in search of the precious tenths of a second that would determine the starting order for Race 1. With Wheldon on pole by 0.675 seconds, he was the clear favorite in the opening race. It would be a race that mirrored his weekend sweep at Road America as Wheldon went on to lead all 27 laps en route to his fourth win of the season. As Wheldon drove off into the distance, contact with another car derailed Bell’s race, leaving the then-championship leader to finish 14th in Race 1. Alianell, meanwhile, would gain six positions in the race, rising from his seventh-place starting position to finish on the second step of the podium. With his strong showing in Race 1 under his best, Alianell would go on to shave nearly one-second off his Qualifying 1 time and place himself on the outside of row one for Race 2. It was a race that would prove to be one of the best the series has seen in this ultra-competitive 2023 season. Wheldon again started from pole position but could not drive away from the field as he had done the day before. With a scorching hot Alianell to his outside and a hungry Bell behind him, Wheldon was in for a tough fight. As he proved in Race 1, if there was a car in front of Alianell he would find a way to get around them and he did so once again in Race 2. Alianell passed Wheldon to take the lead and eventually the win of the race for his eighth podium and his second victory of the season. Critically for Bell, he too found a way around Wheldon and clawed back a handful of the points he had lost in Race 1. In the Master’s division, the Tarlton brothers split the weekend with Rob getting the better of his twin brother Thomas in Race 1, before the spots were reversed in Race 2. In both races, Edgar White claimed the final step of the Master’s podium. Other notable finishes include a pair of top-five results for Caleb Gafrarar and Nicholas Maloy. With six races remaining in the season, Wheldon will have to defend his thin, two-point championship lead over Alianell while Bell, who proved his ability to recover from misfortune will look to close the eight-point deficit he finds himself in. The 2023 Skip Barber Race Series will head to the most iconic and important race venues in the United States including Sebring International Raceway (October 9-11), WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (November 6-7), and Circuit of the Americas (November 20-22) to close out the year. With a scholarship to advance to USF Pro 2000 on the line, the field will have a few weeks of rest before diving into a critical stretch of racing.
