This weekend, graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School won in the NASCAR Cup Series from Watkins Glen and in the NTT IndyCar Series’ finale from Nashville Superspeedway. With NASCAR at Watkins Glen, it presented plenty of opportunities for Skip Barber Racing School alumni to demonstrate their road course prowess in the second race of the NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 16. Our graduates started strong with Ross Chastain earning the pole position on Saturday. Alumni Alex Bowman, Austin Cindric, and AJ Allmendinger joined Chastain on the first three rows of the grid. Sunday’s race featured a mixture of graduates charging through the field, such as Carson Hocevar, Chris Buescher, and Zane Smith, and alumni staying at the point such as the aforementioned Chastain and Cindric. In overtime, Buescher executed a last lap pass at the bus stop to retake the lead of the race, and eventually, the victory. Hocevar, who finished third, secured the best finish of his NASCAR Cup Series career. Other graduates in the top fifteen were Chastain (4th), Smith (5th), Michael McDowell (7th), Cindric (10th), Noah Gragson (11th), and Joey Logano (15th). Alumni Bowman, Cindric, and Tyler Reddick are now all above the cutline for the Round of 16. Graduate Harrison Burton will look to erase a 20-point deficit at Bristol to secure his spot in the Round of 12. In Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race, alumni Allmendinger (3rd), Chandler Smith (4th), Chastain (6th), and Logano (10th), finished in the top ten. The NTT IndyCar Series closed the curtain on its 2024 season, but not before Skip Barber Racing School alumni Colton Herta broke through for the first oval victory of his career. Herta ended the season with six top five finishes in the last seven races, helping him to secure a second-place result in the overall standings, the best finish of his career, and an eight-position improvement compared to 2023. As the Official Racing School of Andretti Autosport and the home of Andretti Autosport Junior Development Drivers Sebastian and Oliver Wheldon, everyone at Skip Barber sends their congratulations to Herta and the Andretti Autosport team. Herta’s teammate, alumni Kyle Kirkwood converted his pole position to a fourth-place result. Graduates Josef Newgarden (3rd), Santino Ferrucci (6th), and Conor Daly (10th) also had strong ends to the season. Daly earned his second top ten finish in five races, a stellar result for his part-time role with Juncos-Hollinger Racing. Half of the drivers who finished the 2024 NTT IndyCar Series in the top ten are Skip Barber Racing School alumni with Herta (2nd), Kirkwood (7th), Newgarden (8th), Ferrucci (9th), and Alexander Rossi (10th). Indy NXT also ended its season in Nashville with Skip Barber graduate, and series rookie, Myles Rowe claiming an eleventh-place finish in the standings. Rowe was one of numerous Skip Barber Racing School graduates to contest the 2024 season including Michael D’Orlando, Taylor Ferns, and Lindsay Brewer. Finally, Skip Barber Racing School Development Driver Alex Garcia got his first taste of GT4 action as he spent the weekend training in Skip Barber Racing’s Aston Martin Vantage GT4 at Sebring International Raceway. Looking ahead, the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship will visit Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a six-hour endurance race. The NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will visit Bristol Motor Speedway. Skip Barber Racing School graduate Sergio Perez will head to the Marina Bay Street Circuit for the Singapore Grand Prix. Lastly, the Skip Barber Race Series will hold its season finale at VIRginia International Raceway where championship contenders Oliver Wheldon and Dean Lambros are separated by just three points.
