The Skip Barber Race Series completed a thrilling week of competition from VIRginia International Raceway with drivers setting new personal-best marks throughout the order. Every session of the week was completed without any interruption from a Full Course Yellow, a testament to the high level of race craft found in the Skip Barber Race Series. Spain’s Ivan Machado Perez continued to pace the field at VIRginia International Raceway. After earning his first-career win on the South Course, Perez carried his momentum to this week on the North Course, winning both races after starting on the front row in each of them. A remarkably consistent season from the 2024 Skip Barber Formula iRacing Series winner has him in control of the championship lead. Perez is not the only driver to have taken a liking to VIRginia International Raceway as Brazil’s Naim Saleh has amassed four podium finishes from VIR, two apiece on the South and North Course layouts. That strong to start to the summer has allowed Saleh to move to fourth in the standings where he is currently locked in a tie with Alan Orzynski. It was a banner weekend for Orzynski who not only earned his first-career Skip Barber Race Series pole position thanks to a blistering lap in Race 1, but he also crossed the line second in the opening race, his career-best Skip Barber Race Series result. With a pair of podium finishes from VIR’s North Course, Orzynski is just seven points behind Chris Spada for second place in the driver’s standings. Spada left VIR with a pair of top five finishes, highlighted by an extraordinary three-car battle for the final spot on the podium that saw Spada, Keagan Day, and Orzynski cross the line separated by less than one second. There was yet more reason to celebrate as Logan Anderson and Grant Mitchell both earned their career-best finish in the Skip Barber Race Series in Race 1. Anderson was the weekend’s biggest mover, climbing three spots in the driver’s standings. It was a great week of racing for both drivers, neither of whom had competed at VIRginia International Raceway prior to taking the green flag. Mitchell, for example, improved his lap time in every session from the opening practice to Race 1, a great example of his hard work this week. Next for the Skip Barber Race Series is a visit to New York’s Finger Lakes and Watkins Glen International. The Skip Barber Race Series will be sharing the iconic 3.450-mile track with Trans-Am from July 11 - 13 for an exciting weekend of racing.
