The Skip Barber Race Series will reach its halfway point at the conclusion of this weekend’s two-race event from Road America, where a field of 16 drivers will be competing at one of the fastest venues on the calendar. Road America will present a collection of unique challenges to the field this upcoming weekend. The track is the longest the series has been to this season, measuring in at just over four miles. The newly repaved circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin consists of multiple long straightaways, presenting opportunities for drivers to draft with one another more frequently, and perhaps more effectively than at other venues. After a scorching start to the 2023 campaign, Jaxon Bell leads the championship standings by 12 points. Bell swept the first four races of the year at Road Atlanta and NOLA Motorsports Park before Andretti Autosport junior driver Sebastian Wheldon scored the first win of his post-karting career at VIRginia International Raceway. “Road America is one of America’s best tracks,” Sebastian Wheldon said. “The new pavement makes it very interesting with the amount of grip the cars have going into the corners. The slip stream will also play a big part in all sorts of different racing situations.” Championship leader Jaxon Bell is looking forward to the challenge that the new track surface and high speeds will provide. “I’m very excited to get on track at Road America,” Bell said. “The new surface has seemed to be a challenge for other series that have run there so far. It should make for an exciting weekend.” Alongside Bell and Wheldon on the entry list are fellow championship contenders Jeshua Alianell who is 12 points behind Wheldon. Alianell is on a hot streak with five straight podium finishes including his first win of the season in Race 2 at VIR. Caleb Gafrarar is fourth in the standings and just three points behind Wheldon. Gafrarar netted his first two podiums at VIR and will look to carry the momentum he has started to build into Road America. Other names on the entry list include NTT IndyCar Series team owner Sam Schmidt’s son Spencer Schmidt, Gabe Tesch, and Dystany Spurlock who is coming off her best finish of sixth in the last race in Virginia. Race 1 is scheduled for 4:30pm EDT on Saturday, August 12. Race 2 is slated for 9:55am EDT on Sunday, August 13. The current standings can be found here.
