Dean Lambros is on the doorstep of the 2024 Skip Barber Race Series title, but Oliver Wheldon sits just three points behind him after another remarkable pair of races at Lime Rock Park. The shortest track on the calendar, and the birthplace of the Skip Barber Racing School, LRP served as a perfect venue for a midweek showdown between the title contenders. A stellar qualifying effort saw Wheldon secure the pole by just 0.067 seconds to set up a potentially season-defining day for the two drivers. But after a win in Race 1 from Lambros and a victory in Race 2 from Wheldon, it’s still too early to begin etching a name into the Skip Barber Race Series championship trophy. Lambros broke Wheldon’s streak of wins at six after moving past the Andretti Autosport Junior Development driver in Race 1. Wheldon kept the pressure on, however, as the pair battled for 23 laps. Both drivers laid down their fastest lap time on the race’s penultimate lap, illustrative of the lengths the two were pushing for the victory. They crossed the line separated by just 0.320 seconds, the second-closest margin of victory of the season. Thomas Nordquist joined Lambros and Wheldon in the top three, securing his second podium finish of the season. Alex Garcia was the race’s biggest mover, improving three spots to earn an eighth-place finish. Elsewhere in Race 1, Matan Achituv collected his career-best Skip Barber Race Series result with a sixth-place finish. Wheldon and Lambros would flip the script in Race 2 with Wheldon standing atop the podium’s highest step, joined by Lambros in second place. The mirroring results ensured the three-point gap in the standings at the start of the day remained at three, setting the stage for a nail-biting finale at VIRginia International Raceway. Jack Mohrhardt capitalized on a strong starting position in Race 2 to secure his maiden Skip Barber Race Series podium finish. Mohrhardt has been riding a wave of momentum since breaking through for his first top five finish at VIRginia International Raceway earlier in the summer. Trevor LaTourrette became the latest name to make his debut in the Skip Barber Race Series, the Colorado-based driver improved one position in Race 2. Alan Orzynski and Caleb Campbell both left Lime Rock Park with top ten finishes. Rob Tarlton, engaged in a battle for the Master’s Class title with his brother Thomas Tarlton, claimed the Master’s Class victory in both races. Thomas, however, is still in a comfortable position to claim his first Master’s Class title. The Skip Barber Race Series will crown its 2024 champion when it visits VIRginia International Raceway on September 18 & 19.
