With a win and a top-five finish in two races at Circuit of the Americas, Sebastian Wheldon claimed the 2023 Skip Barber Race Series championship. Wheldon won six races and collected an additional thirteen podiums throughout the season. Entering the pair of races, four drivers were within reach of the title, with Wheldon the favorite ahead of Jeshua Alianell, Jaxon Bell, and Caleb Gafrarar. The long straights and demanding braking zones of Circuit of the Americas, intermixed with challenging technical sections and highspeed curves, would require the drivers to rely on the training and experience they’ve accumulated in the 2023 season. In qualifying, the four championship contenders combined to lock out the first two rows of the grid, with Sebastian Wheldon securing pole and Jeshua Alianell completing the front row. Gafrarar and Bell, within one-second of Wheldon’s pole time on the second row, set the stage for a showdown in Race 1. With clean track ahead of him, and the championship on the horizon, Wheldon drove a clean Race 1. Crucially, he was able to open up a large enough gap to break away from the draft of the cars behind. Meanwhile, a four-car battle for second was beginning to emerge with Alianell, Bell, and Gafrarar being joined by Nicholas Maloy. Wheldon solidified his title hopes with a victory in Race 1 as Bell set the fastest lap to place himself on pole for Race 2. With a win in hand and needing a clean finish to secure the title, Wheldon capped off his championship season with a top-five finish. Jaxon Bell converted his pole position to a win, as Alianell’s second-place finish earned himself a second overall in the full-season standings. By virtue of winning the championship, Sebastian Wheldon has earned a $100,000 scholarship to compete in a USF-sanctioned series. For his efforts, Jeshua Alianell secured a full-season entry in the 2024 Skip Barber Race Series. Jaxon Bell, meanwhile, collected a half-season entry for next season. In the Masters Division, Rob Tarlton got the better of his twin brother Thomas. The rocket-engineering twin brothers were separated by just thirteen points at the season’s conclusion. The brothers have already confirmed their return to the Skip Barber Race Series for the 2024 season. “We would like to congratulate this year's racers on their enormous growth and successes throughout the year,” Skip Barber Race Series directors Gerardo Bonilla and Ken Fukuda said. “It was an absolute honor to be involved in the direction of, and the development of this year’s class of drivers.
