Dean Lambros swept the opening round of the Skip Barber Race Series, claiming a pair of victories at Sebring International Raceway while series’ rookies Ryan Giannetta and Oliver Wheldon claimed podium finishes in their debut weekends at the historic Sebring International Raceway. The 2024 Skip Barber Race Series features a dynamic grid with drivers from varying backgrounds including karting, sports cars, and even legends cars. Despite the differences in background and experience, the Skip Barber Racing School instructors guided the grid through a pair of races, ending the weekend as the only series to not have a full course yellow. In Race 1, Dean Lambros started from pole position and grew ever more comfortable with his Skip Barber Racing School Formula Car, laying down his fastest lap of the race on his final trip around the 3.741-mile circuit. Behind Lambros was Thomas Tarlton who returns to the Skip Barber Race Series after a runner-up finish in the Master’s Class last season. The battle for the final spot on the podium was fiercely contested as Thomas’ twin brother Rob sought to join his sibling. That plan was interrupted by the stout defense of series’ rookie and former karter Ryan Giannetta who defended pursuits from Rob over the ten-lap race. Giannetta crossed the line just 0.543 seconds ahead of Rob Tarlton. The biggest mover in Race 1 was Oliver Wheldon, the younger brother of reigning Skip Barber Race Series champion Sebastian Wheldon. Oliver started in 12th and climbed to 5th by the time the checkered flag flew. His best lap time of 2:18.798 seconds was good enough to earn him a starting spot on the second row of the grid for Race 2. As in Race 1, Lambros and Thomas Tarlton claimed the first two steps of the podium. This time the pair was joined by Wheldon who put his starting position to good use and finished third, adding a Skip Barber Race Series trophy to his collection. Behind Wheldon, the battle between Giannetta and Rob Tarlton continued into Race 2 with the pair crossing the line even closer on Sunday. This time just 0.337 seconds separated the racers with Giannetta getting the better of Rob Tarlton. Alan Orzynski secured his career-best Skip Barber Race Series finish with a sixth-place result in Race 2. Griffin Yellin climbed three spots in Race 2 to finish inside the top ten, the most of any driver during Sunday’s race. Canadian Caleb Campbell, a former karting teammate of Sebastian Wheldon, was sixth in Race 1 on his Skip Barber Race Series debut. Lincoln Day, Andrew Hitchcock, and Thomas Nordquist meanwhile, left Sebring with a pair of top-ten finishes to start their seasons. Finally, Nicholas DeLucia and Jack Mohrhardt showed consistent improvement with the pair bettering their pace throughout each session. The next round of the Skip Barber Race Series will be held on April 5-7 at NOLA Motorsports Park where it will share the track with the USF family of series, including USF Juniors where drivers who win the Skip Barber Race Series receive a $100,000 scholarship to compete. In total, $375,000 in scholarship funding is available to competitors.
