Skip Barber Racing School graduates returned to Rockingham Speedway with an extraordinary showing, as alumni captured the race victory, pole position, and one rising star earned his career-best finish. More than 21 years after the NASCAR Xfinity Series last raced at Rockingham Speedway, the series made its return to the 0.94-mile track. The race winner, 20-year-old Skip Barber alumni Sammy Smith, was born just four months after the last Xfinity Series car rolled into victory lane. Crossing the line behind Smith was 21-year-old Skip Barber graduate Parker Retzlaff, who drove his Alpha Prime Racing entry to a career-best second-place finish — also the best result in the team’s history. At the start of the race, Retzlaff shared the front row with fellow Skip Barber alumnus Connor Zilisch, who secured the pole. In addition to Retzlaff’s accomplishments, Skip Barber graduate Harrison Burton earned a third-place finish, his best result since rejoining the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Also finishing in the top ten on Saturday were alumni Austin Hill (6th), Josh Williams (7th), and Jeb Burton (8th). Of the six drivers who have clinched a spot in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs, four are graduates of the Skip Barber Racing School with Rockingham winner Smith, joined by Zilisch, Hill, and Brandon Jones. Skip Barber alumni Jake Garcia was the highest-finishing graduate in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race, ending his Friday in second place. Meanwhile, in Formula 1, Skip Barber Racing School alumni Zak Brown and his McLaren Racing outfit won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. With Oscar Piastri’s third victory of the season, the Australian moved into the lead of the World Drivers’ Championship. McLaren now leads the World Constructors’ Championship by 77 points. With four wins in the first five races of the season, the team is off to its best start since 1998. Next weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to action at Talladega Superspeedway. The two most recent winners at the 2.66-mile track — Tyler Reddick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. — are both Skip Barber alumni. The Cup Series will be joined by the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the ARCA Menards Series at Talladega. Additionally, TC America powered by the Skip Barber Racing School, GT4 America, McLaren Trophy America, and Toyota GR Cup North America will all descend upon Circuit of the Americas, where the Skip Barber Race Team will field five entries across those series.
