Alumni of the Skip Barber Racing captured race victories across the country, with triumphs in the GT World Challenge America season-opener from Sonoma Raceway and the NASCAR Xfinity Series from Martinsville Raceway. Graduate Connor De Phillippi scored a pair of podium finishes in GTWCA, including a win in Race 2 on Sunday. Fellow alumni Colin Braun and Robby Foley, competing in the Pro-Am class, also netted a pair of podiums with Foley snagging the class-victory in Race 1. Braun’s teammate, George Kurtz, added a victory in Race 1 of GT America to the long list of accolades achieved by Skip Barber graduates. It was in GT4 America, however, where Skip Barber alumni put an exclamation mark on the weekend. Alex and Michael Garcia, driving for Skip Barber’s professional racing team, scored their first career victory. The pair of brothers battled torrential rain and a competitive field to emerge on the top step of the podium. Alex and Michael also found success in their own entries with Michael claiming a podium in his TC America debut and Alex securing the Hard Charger Award in Toyota GR Cup North America. The inaugural season of McLaren Trophy, America also began in Sonoma where two entries from Skip Barber Racing competed. Among the drivers racing under the Skip Barber banner were Cooper Broll and McLaren Graduate Driver Tommy Pintos, who won the 2023 rendition of McLaren Trophy, Europe. Chris Leichtweis and Jason Guzman also made their debut with Skip Barber Racing. Meanwhile, in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Skip Barber alumni Austin Hill emerged from a chaotic showdown on Saturday night to win his second race of the season. Graduates Jake Garcia (3rd) and Lawless Alan (10th) had top ten finishes in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race. On Sunday, Skip Barber alumni Bubba Wallace netted his second-consecutive third-place finish with a strong drive from Martinsville. Fellow graduates Ross Chastain (6th), Joey Logano (8th), and Todd Gilliland (10th) also finished in the top ten. Gilliland’s finish helped him climb four spots in the standings, the biggest improvement in the field. Next weekend, Formula 1 returns with the Japanese Grand Prix where Skip Barber alumni Zak Brown and his McLaren Racing outfit will look to extend their lead in the championship. The NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series will visit The Lady in Black, Darlington Raceway, for a pair of races on throwback weekend. Finally, this week will see the season-opening round of the 2025 Skip Barber Race Series where a strong field of new and returning faces will begin their title campaign from Sebring International Raceway. Among the entrants are drivers from four different countries on three continents including top Brazilian karter Naim Saleh and Spain’s Ivan Machado Perez, who won a seat in the Series through the Skip Barber Racing School iRacing Shootout.
