The Skip Barber Race Series completed an all-green-flag weekend of racing at Watkins Glen International. Competitors navigated the track’s high-speed corners and elevation changes with skill, as Spain’s Ivan Machado Perez extended his summer hot streak by sweeping both races at the iconic road course. Perez topped the charts in both practice sessions and started Race 1 from pole position. However, the gap between him and Alan Orzynski steadily shrank throughout the weekend. A big factor in that was the learning-first nature of the Skip Barber Race Series. After each session, Perez (from Spain) and Orzynski (from Mexico) reviewed laps together — in their shared native language. The two Spanish-speaking drivers analyzed onboard video, compared telemetry, and broke down each other’s lines. That collaboration helped both of them cut several seconds from their lap times across the weekend. They weren’t alone in improving — every driver on the grid managed to go quicker from Free Practice 1 to Free Practice 2, and again from Practice to Qualifying Chris Spada returned to the Skip Barber podium, capping off his best weekend since NOLA Motorsports Park with a second-place finish in Race 2. The season-long battle between Orzynski and Spada shows no signs of slowing down. They left Watkins Glen with matching results, one second-place and one third-place finish each. With just seven points separating them in the standings, the battle remains wide open heading into the second half of the season. By scoring a double podium, Spada also slowed the progress of Ivan Machado Perez, potentially setting up a fight for the Skip Barber Race Series crown in the final three rounds of the season. History is on Spada’s side as at this time last year, the eventual champion Oliver Wheldon was 38 points behind then-leader Dean Lambros with four races left. Fast-forward to 2025 and Spada is 44 points back, but with six races still on the table. A late-summer charge would allow history to repeat itself and give Chris Spada the Skip Barber Race Series title. Nick DeLucia made a strong return to the Race Series, earning a pair of fourth-place finishes. DeLucia made his debut in 2024 and wasted no time getting back up to speed in the Skip Barber Formula Car. He was fourth-fastest in the opening practice and showcased strong race craft while battling in the top five during Race 2. DeLucia’s double top-five weekend was the best of his Skip Barber Race Series career. The 56-point haul he amassed is the third-highest of any driver making their first start in the 2025 season and the best result for a non-full season driver – a terrific result for the New Jersey native. The biggest mover of the weekend was Logan Anderson, whose 50-point haul vaulted him up two spots in the standings — he now sits fifth overall. Colorado’s Trevor LaTourrette also climbed one position thanks to two top-five finishes. No driver shaved off more time from their lap between FP1 and Race 1 than LaTourrette did and he now has four consecutive top-five finishes. With momentum building, any discussion of who could land on the podium in the final three rounds of the season ought to feature LaTourrette’s name. Scott Pyle made his Skip Barber Race Series debut this weekend and showed steady progress as he acclimatized himself to the Race Series. He improved his lap time in every session, making for a promising first outing and a strong foundation for the second half of the season. This was the first time since 2023 that the Skip Barber Race Series competed at Watkins Glen. This time, the Series was racing alongside Trans-Am where Skip Barber alumni Chris Dyson and Tristan McKee have been competing this year.
