The Skip Barber Race Series crowned its third different winner of the season with a pair of thrilling races from VIRginia International Raceway. Everything from rain to hail to sunny skies presented the drivers with new challenges that tested their skills. Alongside the expert coaching from Skip Barber instructors, the field navigated the trying conditions beautifully and demonstrated the development-first nature of the Skip Barber Race Series. Entering VIRginia International Raceway, Spain’s Ivan Machado Perez held onto a narrow four-point lead and was searching for his first win of the season. Leaving VIR, Machado Perez had expanded that lead, earned a breakthrough first-career win, and added a second victory to his record. There’s perhaps no better example of the competitiveness of the Skip Barber Race Series than that three pairs of drivers are tied with one another. Remarkably, Ethan Booher and Chris Spada are deadlocked in second with the same number of wins and finishing positions that mirror one another. Booher and Spada each have a pair of wins on the season and earned top five finishes in both races on VIR’s South Course. It was an impressive weekend from Brazil’s Naim Saleh, who bounced back from a challenging round at NOLA with authority to earn a pair of podium finishes in Virginia. The 62 points that Saleh accumulated at VIR were the best of his burgeoning Skip Barber Race Series career. Saleh is tied alongside Alan Orzynski in the standings with both drivers on 163 points. Compared to last season after six races, Orzynski has improved 19 points, continuing the trend of returning drivers demonstrating year-over-year improvement. The week’s first Hard Charger Award went the way of John O’Donnell, who climbed four spots to finish Race 1 in second, his best finish of the season. Saleh earned the Hard Charger Award in Race 2, gaining four spots in the race. O’Donnell is now tied in points with Indiana’s Keagan Day, who also set a new mark for career-best finish in the Skip Barber Race Series with a fourth place run in Race 2.
