The Skip Barber Race Series grid will face a week of trying conditions at VIRginia International Raceway for the next round of the iconic, training-first, Formula Car series. With wet weather looming over the old-school track, drivers will have to rely on all of their training to find the top step of the podium. VIRginia International Raceway will be a familiar track for many. As Skip Barber’s home facility, many drivers have spent time training on its various layouts. Competing on the 1.650-mile South Course amongst a field of other drivers will present a new experience for the racers, however. After battling the bumps of Sebring and the high speed straights of NOLA, the undulating corners of VIR will be another new factor for the grid to navigate. With four second place finishes to open the season, Spain’s Ivan Machado Perez holds onto a narrow four-point lead over Chris Spada. For Perez, he’ll be returning to the track where he won the Skip Barber iRacing Formula Shootout to earn his seat into the Skip Barber Race Series. A breakthrough first win could well be in the cards for Perez whose consistency has bolstered his season thus far. For Spada, he’ll be seeking to continue the momentum he built at NOLA where he swept the weekend with a pair of victories. Just two points behind Spada is Ethan Booher whose quick start to the season at Sebring, where he earned two victories, has him within striking distance of the Spada, Perez, and the championship lead. Alan Orzynski is on a run of three top five finishes heading into VIR. Orzynski, from Mexico, matched set his career-best finish at NOLA with a pair of third place runs. He’ll be one of several drivers completing Advanced Coaching sessions prior to the formal commencement of the Race Series’ itinerary. Indiana’s Keagan Day and Brazil’s Naim Saleh are also training with Skip Barber Racing School instructors ahead of the Race Series. Day earned a pair of top five finishes in his debut at Sebring and will be keen to best that mark this week. Saleh, meanwhile, has one podium finish to his name and sits fifth in the standings. A strong week from the young Brazilian could see him move up the order. Like Day, Skip Barber Race Series rookie John O’Donnell launched his Skip Barber career with a statement performance in Sebring. O’Donnell was fourth in the opening round of the season.
