The 2024 Skip Barber Race Series will be decided in the season finale at VIRginia International Raceway this week. Two drivers, Oliver Wheldon and Dean Lambros are within reach of the title with Lambros leading Wheldon by a mere three points. After winning five consecutive races over the summer, Wheldon narrowed the gap to Lambros to three points ahead of the penultimate round of the season at Lime Rock Park. There, the pair traded wins and runner-up finishes in the two races to leave their three-point margin intact ahead of this week’s finale. With 35 points awarded to the winner and 32 given to second place, every position will count over the course of the doubleheader. Now at Skip Barber’s home track of VIRginia International Raceway, Wheldon will look to continue his summer surge while Lambros will seek to defend the lead he built in the spring. At stake is a $100,000 scholarship to continue their racing journey and the honor of being a champion in the iconic Skip Barber Race Series. Unlike the first visit to VIR, drivers will face the track’s Grand Course. The layout’s challenging 24 turns will serve as a final exam for the grid that has been developing their skill set since the season opener at Sebring International Raceway in March. Strong second-half runs from Caleb Campbell, Jack Mohrhardt, and Thomas Nordquist have them poised to move up the standings. Mohrhardt, who earned his first career Skip Barber Race Series podium at Lime Rock Park, netted 50 points last round, the best result of his season. Campbell will battle Rob Tarlton for fourth place in the overall standings with just seven points separating the two drivers. Meanwhile, a consistent run for Nordquist will likely earn him at least one more spot in the standings. Skip Barber Racing School Development Driver Alex Garcia will arrive at VIRginia International Raceway fresh off his first training session in Skip Barber Racing’s Aston Martin Vantage GT4. His best finish in the Skip Barber Race Series is eighth and he has not finished outside the top ten in five races. Knocking on the door of the top five is Alan Orzynski. The Mexican driver’s summer was particularly fruitful, scoring 151 over the three rounds of the season. If Orzynski can regain some of that summer momentum, a top-five finish could be in the cards. Series newcomer Matan Achituv is coming off the best weekend of his young Skip Barber Race Series career. With 49 points and a pair of top-ten finishes in the bag at Lime Rock Park, Achituv has shown rapid development and will look to end the season on a high note. Thomas Tarlton will capture the Master’s Class title once he takes the green flag in Race 1. Like Lambros, a strong first half of the season propelled Thomas to a comfortable margin over his twin brother Rob in the Master’s Class battle. Lastly, Ryan Anderson will make his Skip Barber Race Series debut. Anderson completed his Two Day Advanced Racing School and a round of Private Training at VIR, giving the debutant crucial experience at the track.
